37 37 Elizabeth I • Legacy • “Virgin Queen” since she never married • England at a high point and developing world power • Crown passed to cousin the Stuarts (James I and Charles I) who did not believe in compromising with the Puritans in Parliament • Led later to a civil war (1642-1649) and brief overthrow of the monarchy
Bloodless Revolution in EnglandTimeline- the struggle between King and Parliament • 1603 – James I takes the throne in England • 1629 – Charles I dissolves Parliament • 1642 – English Civil War begins • 1649 – Charles I is executed at the end of the Civil War: Oliver Cromwell sets up dictatorship and rules England • 1660 - Parliament brings back the monarchy: Charles II is crowned king (the Restoration) • 1688 – The Glorious Revolution takes place – bloodless overthrow of James II • 1689 – Parliament passes the English Bill of Rights. A constitutional monarchy is established which laws limit the monarch’s power.
