France Great Britain
By August, German army begins to retreat east • The Soviet army is pushing from the east • Aug 25 the Allied Army liberates Paris. France is back with the Allies • Eisenhower’s Allied army continues to push Germany from the west D-Day Battle of the Bulge • Dec 1944: In a last ditch attempt, Hitler decides to counterattack in the west • Battle of the Bulge – Germans break through weak American line at Ardennes • Attack catches Allies by surprise – Germans do well early • March 1945: The Allied troops are victorious – FDR dies in America in April

The Pacific War • The Allies then moved to the island of Okinawa • As Japanese troops retreat the only thing between the Allies & Japan were a few islands and the kamikaze planes • March 1945: After a month of bitter fighting, the Allies take the island of Iwo Jima • Okinawa is one of the bloodiest battles of the war: 100,000 Japanese & 12,000 American troops killed in a month and a half of fighting • Despite the heavy casualties, Japan refuses to surrender.
