  2. What is a sentence? Subject + Verb + a Complete Thought

  3. Step 1 Search and destroy the prepositional phrases. A subject or verb will never be in a prepositional phrase. Clemson defeated Georgia in the first game of the season.

  4. Step 2: Find the Subject… • Does the action of the verb.  • Is what the sentence is talking about. • Will be a noun or a pronoun. Trick: Ask yourself who or what did or is something?

  5. Step 3: Find the Verb • Will usually come after the subject • Will show action or be one of the linking or helping verbs in our song. • Trick: What did they do or what are they?

  7. Guided Practice • During class, Mrs. Wilson bounced the big, yellow ball. • The Vols beat Mississippi state this past weekend. • Everyone is going to McDonalds after school.

  8. Search and Destroy Practice • 1. During hot summer weather, I like swimming at the beach near my house. • 2. The beach is surrounded by many trees with leafy branches giving plenty of shade. • 3. The lake is very deep in the center, but it is quite shallow near shore. • 4. In the middle of the lake, there are several small islands; some people swim out to them. • 5. On the bushes along the shore, I can hang my wet towel.

  9. 6. With a friend, I once rowed a boat across the lake from my beach to the opposite shore. 7. Beneath the surface of the water, we could see many tiny silver fish around the boat. 8. In spite of our fatigue, we rowed for three hours, until suppertime. 9. We had a picnic meal beneath the shade of the trees beside the water. 10. After a rest and a short stroll, we rowed home over the gently rolling waves, under a starry sky.

  10. Direct Objects • Receive the action • Follow only action verbs • Answer the question who or what after an action verb • Will be a noun or pronoun Formula subject + actionverb+ what? or who?= direct object • Grant and Christian play baseball on the weekends.

Predicate Nominatives (noun) • Answer the question who or what after a linking verb • Rename the subject • Will be a noun or pronoun Ex.)The King Library and Archives in Atlanta is the largest repository of primary source materials on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the American Civil Rights Movement in the world Peyton Manning and Tauren Poole are former Vol football players.

  12. Predicate Adjectives • Follow only linking verbs • Describe the subject Ex.) The shoe is beautiful. He is very strong.

  13. Indirect Objects • Follow only action verbs • Indicates to whom or for whom the action of a verb in a sentence is performed • Will be a noun or pronoun Ex.) General Zaroff gave Rainsford warm clothes and a hot meal before the hunt began.

  14. Guided Practice • After we returned from the band camp, the camp owner sent each band member complimentary caps with the camp name on them. • "I think I am smart unless I am really, really in love, and then I am ridiculously stupid." -Taylor Swift • Marlon Walls is a defensive lineman for the Vols. • My puppies are so cuddly and sweet. • Mrs. Wilson gave the class candy.
