RPI SWE Elections 2011 Thursday, March 31, 2011 6th General Body Meeting 6:30-7:30pm
President Candidates: Andrea Maret Cary Kaczowka
Andrea Maret Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I joined SWE freshman year basically because my mom had talked about her involvement in college. I quickly decided it was the club for me and I decided to accept a leadership position later that year when it was offered to me. I am so glad I chose to devote my time to SWE. It has given me so much professional development, leadership, networking opportunities and most importantly a group of friends I know I can count on. Therefore, I am running for an officer position because SWE has become a very important part of my RPI experience and I want to be able to make it a great experience for others. What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? Everything! Specifically I’m very involved in outreach because I still feel like a kid and it’s really fun to not only teach kids but learn along with them. It’s a really rewarding experience and I’m glad RPI SWE has such a strong program. This year I worked with NSBE and SHPE on Collegebowl and Breaking Barriers Women Unite and have contributed what I can to the Region F Conference. • Chemical Engineering • Class Year: 2012 • Previous E-Board Positions: • Vice President • Outreach Director • Social/Alumni Coordinator
Andrea Maret What qualifies you for the position(s)? Please be specific in regards to descriptions and officer duties listed in bylaws. I am qualified for this position because I have previous experience on the E-board and will be able to use that knowledge to problem solve and help guide our section to success. I have previously served at the Social/Alumni Coordinator, Outreach Director, and Vice President. I’m still highly involved in the Outreach Committee and try to make it to every event I can. Through my experience on the E-board I have learned I cannot do everything myself and it is very important to have a strong team in which we all can rely on each other. I hope to be able to use my previous experience as outreach director and working with committees like Breaking Barriers and Outreach to be able to recognize and use the strengths of others and also recognize when others need help, including myself. I also hope to be able to creatively motivate others to perform at their best. I likewise, look forward to their help and insights. As president, it would be my goal to first satisfy RPI SWE the members and then work up towards accomplishing goals that would be recognized by national SWE. We would not have an organization if we did not have invested members. In regards to the by-laws, the biggest thing I have to work on is learning about finances. I would work hard at the end of this year to learn from Andrea, Morgan and even Sara about how RPI SWE finances work and be able to review the budget with a critical eye. I will stay organized with submitting section reports always keeping the deadlines in mind. I will try to make going to annual conference an exciting experience for not only the E-board, but other general body members as well. I hope we can work with the incoming funds from Region F Conference to be able to give body members the opportunity to attend annual conference. I will try hard to not become overwhelmed with activity, but to be able to think clearly and creatively to be and overall guide for our section. Please include any other information you feel RPI SWE should know about you. I think SWE is SWASOME! • Chemical Engineering • Class Year: 2012 • Previous E-Board Positions: • Vice President • Outreach Director • Social/Alumni Coordinator

Andrea polanco • Industrial & Management Engineering • Class Year: 2012 • Previous SHPE E-Board Positions: • External Secretary • SWE E-board Meetings Attended: 1 Why are you choosing to run for a SWE officer position? I want to run for a SWE officer position because I know I can help increase the number of active members, maintain accurate and organized records of each event/activities and bring diversity to SWE. I want other women in the engineering field to learn and understand the mission of SWE. Other girls who are in my field do not have interest in SWE and they feel it won’t help them, which is the contrary. In addition, I want to bring more of SHPE’s women to participate and network with SWE members. I think they are not aware that this organization is dedicated to us. Furthermore, I feel SWE can help me with my goals and career path. I want to get to know more of SWE’s membership and organization. What qualifies you for the position(s)? Please be specific in regards to descriptions and officer duties listed in bylaws. Currently, I am the External Secretary of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and this position is essentially a combination of both Secretary and Membership Director of SWE. As an External Secretary, I keep track of all current members, the number of members who attend the GBM/activities/volunteer work etc, recruit new members to join, update the point system of each member, keep record of all events/section, responsible for the events that I host and make decisions, take pictures of all events, keep E-board on track with the meeting, keep the membership updated with upcoming events, send out flyers, and help out the other Executive board members with anything else. Since SHPE has a smaller E-board the tasks are heavily weighted. With this experience from SHPE, I believe I can be a great asset to SWE. I reread the bylaws for both Secretary and Membership director and I am able to say I am qualified for either position that the SWE Executive Board would like me to pursue. What activities and/or committees have you been involved in with SWE? I helped out during the Exploring Engineering Day, attended Breaking Barriers, helped out during College Bowl, and I attend most of the GBM’s and events. Please include any other information you feel RPI SWE should know about you. I do wish that I had participated more with SWE starting my freshmen year. Together, we really can change the world.
