North Frederick Elementary is a school of excellence. We provide an enriching and safe learning environment where collaboration and communication are highly valued. We are a community of learners who are committed to continuous staff and student enrichment. Staff at North Frederick Elementary School is highly qualified and stable. They value the input of all stakeholders (students, parents, and the community) in the process of continuous improvement. All staff reflects on research and data in order to continually refine instructional practices. As a result, students are proficient on local and state measures of performance. Students demonstrate age-appropriate skills and processes necessary for becoming lifelong learners and productive citizens.

What curriculum will be followed? • There is no separate curriculum. • Emphasis will be on extension, enrichment, and acceleration based on abilities and interests.
What might the instructional activities look like? • A variety of activities promoting deep understanding and thinking critically • hands-on investigations • problem solving activities • individual and cooperative projects
How many students in a class? • This depends on actual enrollment however, it could range from 24 – 32. • We have an allocation for 4 magnet teachers next year.
Will my child work in different groups during the day? • Assess students to differentiate instruction • Structures include: • Total Class • Instructional level grouping (LA and Math) • Regrouping within level • Individual
How will my child be transported to NFES? • County bus shuttle system –may be middle school bus – dismissal at 2:20 • Carpooling • Transport by parent- students stay until 2:47
Homework for students? • Time allocations on average for grades 1-2 is 15 minutes/grade 3 is 30 minutes/grades 4-5 is 45 minutes daily • Types of Homework – practice, preparation, extension, integration • Time management, analytical thinking, and research skills might be needed
How will my child be integrated into the general ed. student population? • Lunch and recess • Specials at the same time • Grade level field trips and culminating events • PTA events etc.
Other factors to consider • Your Child’s: • Social-emotional development • Separation from friends, family, community and familiar setting • Change in academic rigor • Transition to the student’s home school for middle school
NFES Magnet Program • Arrival/Dismissal • North Frederick begins and ends earlier than some other elementary schools with the instructional day being from 8:20 AM – 2:48 PM. • Students may begin arriving to school at 8:00 AM, and are expected to be in class by 8:18 AM for instruction to begin promptly at 8:20 AM. • Dismissal may begin as early as 2:20 PM for magnet students who use FCPS transportation for areas outside of the NFES district. While no new instruction begins after early dismissal begins, students remaining will receive instructional support reinforcing previously learned skills or enhancing others.
NFES Magnet Program We have incentives for students with perfect (no minutes of instruction missed) and exemplary attendance (less than 2 days) If child is not an “early bird” or is not riding the school sponsored bus and is pulled out of class early, the time will be marked on the student attendance record.

Frequently asked questions • Do we know class size now? • No. We do not. Class sizes range from 24-30. Based on numbers of students, there may be split grades meaning two grades in the same class.
