Upgrades & Status • ToF Barrel – 65% installed; Complete installation by Summer 2009; 2p -1<h<1 • Extend PID to ~3 GeV/c pp, AA • Forward Gem Tracker (FGT) • pp 500 GeV W program • In construction installation by summer 2011 • Heavy Flavour Tracker • CD-0 approved; CDR in prep; PED and construction FY10 • Fully installed in FY13 for run-14; prototype for run-12 • Min bias Au-Au and pp 200 GeV TPC review BNL
Upgrades in proposal or pre-proposal stage • Muon Tracking Chamber • Outside Magnet. Muon detection 56% of 2p • Physics: J/psi,Ypsilon, e-m • Requires TPC (low rate) • Forward Hadron Calorimeter (FHC) • pp 200 (500) forward jet. • Forward triggered – forward jet- mid-rapidity p0,jet • High Level trigger (HLT) • Fast tracking and event selection (may result in higher TPC rates since it will reject events). • J/psi, di-leptons.. • GMT • Continuous and distortions by match to tracking. • Situated in ToF trays TPC review BNL
RHIC Summary projections (2008) • ‘07 store <L> : 12×1026cm-2s-1for Au-Au at 200 GeV • ‘13 projected : 40×1026cm-2s-1 [stochastic Cooling, b*] • ‘07 store <L> : 2.3×1031cm-2s-1 for p-p at 200 GeV, • ‘13 projected 8.2×1031cm-2s-1 [b*,I/b] • 500 GeV is factor 2.5 higher (scales by g) both with 70% polarization; 60% of calendar time in store (100h/week) (presently 50-60 h/week) TPC review BNL
AA program • Significant Min Bias program for HFT • Au-Au in 2-3 years ; 500-1,000 M events - i.e 500 evts/sec for 10 weeks running for multiple years • pp 200 GeV ; large MB data set too. • UU program likely (v2,…) i.e. Min Bias • Low-Energy scans TPC review BNL
pp 500 GeV W program - FGT • The inner pad-rows are essential for tracking in certain eta region • Planned 300pb-1 over 2-3 years (minimum goal) • The electron momentum is high; triggering with calorimeter will result in low trigger rate, and gating grid opening Use inner padrows for tracking TPC review BNL
pp 500/200 GeV DG • Measurement of di-jet in -1<h<2 using EMC + TPC to determine x1,x2; Observable ALL vs. xT • Possible Significant trigger rate – thus TPC. Concurrent with FGT program TPC review BNL
Strawman Schedule -> 2014 • Preliminary schedule up to 2014 exists. • Additional AA and pp program extends past 2014 • E.g HFT AA and pp 200 ~2013-2016 • Overall string STAR program for several years, but not detailed plans yet. TPC review BNL
Conclusion • Significant MB and low-E triggered program for 2011-2017 utilizing the STAR detector with the TPC. • The projected program for the future calls for significant running with both pp and A-A • 300-900 pb-1 500 GeV pp • 600 pb-1 200 GeV pp • Multi year program with Au-Au and U.U at RHIC-II luminosities. • All in all magnitudes larger luminosities than already delivered in the first 10 years of RHIC (1999-2008) TPC review BNL
