Transformational Leadership • Transformational leadership has been described by various individuals • Many articles written about this style and it is considered the most popular to teach or model
Definition 1 • According to Wikipedia: • Transformational leadership is a leadership style where one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality
Definition 2 • According to Tracey and Hinkin (1998), transformational leadership is a process that motivates people by appealing to higher ideas and moral values, defining and articulating a vision of the future and forming a base of credibility
Four Key Elements of Transformational Leadership The Four I’s: • Idealized influence • Inspirational motivation • Intellectual stimulation • Individualized consideration (Joanne Ciulla)
How Common Is Transformational Leadership • Transformational leadership is often seen in various situations such as: • Parents motivating their children • A teacher motivating a student or students • A manager motivating their staff
Burns • MacGregor Burns first introduced transformational leadership in 1978 but not for long term care or even healthcare at the time, it was for political leadership • Burns described and compared two conflicting leadership styles
Transactional • First: Transactional leadership Example: “If you help me THEN I will help you”
Transactional cont~ • If it benefits “me” and I get somewhere in life then “fine” if it does not go well, the relationship can end at any point. • No loyalty or support involved by either individual
Transformational • Flip side is ‘Transformational’ Leadership • The leader works to establish a committed relationship between the leader and the follower
Transformational • Belief that transformational leaders are facilitators of change and move the process through the organization • Create a sense of possibility and vision for the future of the organization • Have a desire for common goals, not “me” but “us”

The Leader’s Self Inventory • Before a leader is strong enough to lead • They need to have a personal transformation • A leaders behavior influences and motivates others so it is very important that a leader does a “self evaluation”

How Do We Decide • When you are talking about leadership style, it is a good idea to write down what want you want to be as a leader, what will your leadership “wish list” include?
Leading Your Staff through Change • Look at the needs of your staff and how you can best lead them through culture change and all of the day to day changes that occur within your community
What Qualities Make the “Best” Style? • How do you want the residents and elders to be treated? • Start thinking in terms of best serving your population and then consider these qualities as what you want to model for your staff
Respect • First and foremost is respect • You want your staff to know that you respect and appreciate them
Dignity • You want the staff to have a sense of dignity about working for your organization to feel that they are treated with dignity and in turn that they treat the residents and elders with dignity
Tailored to Fit • Your leadership style should be tailored to meet the needs of the organization and the needs of each individual, each of your staff

Hierarchy Top Down • I am the boss what I say “goes” • Staff have little say in decision making • Get the job done, task over relationship • Very task oriented in nature

What are the benefits? • Research has identified many benefits to transformational leadership. Examples include~ • Job satisfaction • Less stress • Happier residents • Improvement in quality of care and safety practices
Summary • As a leader…know your staff • Work to bring out the best in each individual • Value their input and allow them to grow • This is the foundation of a transformational leader!
