Ozone Layer Depletion • What is Ozone Layer? • A region of the upper atmosphere, between about 15 and 30 kilometers (10 and 20 miles) in altitude, containing a relatively high concentration of ozone that absorbs solar ultraviolet radiation in a wavelength range not screened by other atmospheric components. Also called ozonosphere.
Ozone layer protects us from the ultraviolet rays. • But a very large ozone hole was discovered in the ozone layer over Antarctic. It is as large as 3 times the area of Australia.
What would happen if the earth had no ozone? • It would freeze, the ozone is like its blanket keeping the heat in. • The sun would overwhelmingly zap the earth with heat. • But the heat would bounce off of the earth back into space.
