Table to Contents • Recognition of the Need • The Problem • Objective • Gathering Information • Brainstorming • Design and Analysis
Recognition of the Need • Cell phone service in places where there is no or unreliable electrical grid
Problem • Limited cell service • Residents do not have access to cell service in Wirruca • Unreliable electrical grid to power tower
Objective • Find Use for GE’s battery in this station • Create cell service • If cost effective, create dump energy to be sold
Information About Town • Wirruca, Nicaragua • 48 Families • Disposable income: 10$/month • Mostly coffee growers • Population ~307 • Based on 48 families and an avg. of 4.4 children per family
Brainstorming • Not enough wind for turbine • High Sunlight • Want dump energy to provide extra revenue • Cell phone charging station? • Selling electricity to homes? • Increase efficiency
Our Design • Temperature Regulation • Peltier Cooler/Heater • A/C • Cellulose Insulation • GE Sodium Halide Battery (type A2) • Diesil Generator • 63 x GE 200 W PV panels • Small (about 62”x35”) • Costs less than using larger panels
PeltierCooler Heater • Way to heat the battery • Can help cool the room: reduces need for air conditioner.
Cellulose Insulation • Prevents heat transfer via conduction, convection, infiltration, and radiation. • This is measured by the R-Value, a numerical representation of the resistance to heat flow. • Cellulose insulation is treated with chemicals to make it highly fire retardant. • Lowers the sound transmission coefficient.
Cellulose Insulation: Expected Cost Floor (10’x20’) $14/inch Desired R-Value=13 3.51” of insulation needed $49.19 Walls (8’x60’) $33.6/inch Desired R-Value=13 3.51” of insulation needed $118.05 Ceiling (10’x20’) $14/inch Desired R-Value=30 8.11” of insulation needed $113.51 Total = $280.75
