  1. South Jordan Middle 2014 SAGE Results Answering the whats, whys, and hows of SAGE testing results.

  2. Proficiency = you’ve learned the material well!

  3. Note about the data used: • The data used in this presentation represent an average percentage of proficiency from the three CRT/SAGE subjects tested. • These subjects are English Language Arts (ELA), Math and Science. • The percentages of proficiency used represent the school as a whole and are not broken down by grade level.

  4. South Jordan Middle CRT results School Year • What do you notice when looking at the data? • What happened to test scores in each subject from 2010 to 2013? • Did South Jordan Middle maintain high levels of proficiency and growth during this three year period?

  5. South Jordan Middle CRT and SAGE results comparison • The data for 2013-14 (bolded) represents the first year of SAGE testing. • What clearly stands out when you compare our CRT results (2010-13) with our SAGE results (2013-14)? • What can explain the difference in results?

  6. Apples aren’t Oranges…and the CRT isn’t the SAGE • The difference in CRT and SAGE lies in the fact that these two tests are NOT the same. • Analogy #1: think of the old core/CRT as a person running a sprint…now picture that same person running the sprint and doing hurdles – this is the new core/SAGE. • What does sprinting and doing hurdles do for that person’s physical skill development? How can this be applied academically to the new core/SAGE?

  7. Old (sprint) vs. New (sprint with hurdles)

  8. Analogy #2: As we get stronger, we increase the weight of what we’re lifting.

  9. Why strengthen our “academic” muscles? • Why have academic standards/expectations increased? As you discuss this question, consider the following facts: • By 2020, 74% of jobs will require more than a HS diploma (this means college/trade school) • 40% of students in college need remediation classes in at least one subject (not fully prepared) • 50% of Utah graduates enroll in college – of that 50%, only 25% graduate with a degree within 6 years (this is just over 1 out of every 10 HS grads)

  10. How is South Jordan Middle handling the increase in performance expectationsand accountability? • The data above represents the average percentage of proficiency on the SAGE test for South Jordan Middle, Jordan School District (JSD), and the state of Utah • How is South Jordan doing in comparison to the district’s average scores? In comparison to the rest of the state? • Are we where we want to be on SAGE proficiency? Where can our school improve? • What things at South Jordan Middle school help you succeed as a student?

  11. Summary • SAGE testing and the new core is more demanding than the old core and CRT testing. • South Jordan has shown a history of high levels of proficiency and growth on CRT tests…over time this same pattern will be shown to be true for SAGE testing/new core. • South Jordan Middle students will succeed because: our community cares (faculty, parents, and students), we have programs in place to help (Intervention/Lunch School/PROWL)…and because our students are ready to step up to the challenge.
