French approach to Blue Growth Nathalie Lefèvre Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), LOCEAN Paris, FRANCE Visiting scientist at UFPE, Recife
Main research objectives • Role of the ocean under increasing atmospheric CO2 • Detection of trend with time-series stations • Monitoring ocean acidification
European CO2 network FRANCE (IRD) Contribution to the European ocean CO2 network CAVASSOO, FP5, 2001-2004 • France - French Guiana line • France-Brazil line • 2 moorings CARBOOCEAN, FP6, 2005-2009 CARBOCHANGE, FP7, 2011-2015 Ocean component of the European research infrastructure ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) designed for long term monitoring of CO2 fluxes (atmosphere-land-ocean)
Collaboration with Brazil to enhance the CO2observations in the tropical and South Atlantic Underway CO2 measurements on board the Brazilian Navy ship ANTARES Installation of a CO2 sensor at 8oN, 38oW on an instrumented mooring French CO2 system for underway measurements on board the Antares
INCT-AmbTropic(National Institute on science and technology in tropical and marine environments) Main oceanographic centers in the N-NE Brazil (UFPE, UFBA, UFRN, UFPA, UFMA, UFRA, …) ~ 50 scientists … ~ 60 PhD students, … UFPE Amazon river St. Peter-St. Paul Archipelago Parnaiba river WP1 Coastal Zone WP2 Continental shelf WP3 Ocean Aracati Bank Rocas and F. Noronha WG3.2: Biogeochemical cycles, CO2fluxes and acidification of the tropical Atlantic (M. Araujo, N. Lefèvre) St. Francisco river
Ongoing and future French-Brazilian partnership in marine sciences • Transfer of technological expertise within the INCT for building a Brazilian CO2 system for underway measurements on board ships • Equip the Brazilian Navy ship ANTARES with an underway CO2 system • Set up 3 CO2 time-series stations at Fernando de Noronha, archipelago St Peter St Paul and Rocas atoll ASPSP FdN Rocas Mooring with a CARIOCA (Carbone à l’InterfaceOcéan-Atmosphère) CO2sensor from NKE (France)
Bilateral project BIOAMAZON, 2014-2016 (coord. IRD-FAPEMA with participation of UFPE) Propriedadesbiológicas e biogeoquímicasao largo do Maranhão e napluma do Rio Amazonas Objective: Determine the spatial and temporal variability of the biological and biogeochemical properties in the western tropical Atlantic, off the state of Maranhão and in the Amazon plume This project uses the cruises made during the INCT AmbTropic and the voyages of the merchant ship France-French Guiana
Future French-Brazilian partnership in marine sciences A proposal in response to the Horizon2020 call BG-8-2014: Developing in-situ Atlantic Ocean Observations for a better management and sustainable exploitation of the maritime resources.
