Choose and Apply to Colleges • Evaluate options • Choose schools that meet academic, financial, and extracurricular needs • Shop for schools • Take campus and game day tours • Attend open houses and college preview days • Apply to several schools • Narrow choices to 3 schools – no more than 7 schools • Include at least one “safety” • Don’t dismiss schools based solely on price

FAFSA- Federal Application for Free Federal Aid • Apply starting Jan 1st 2014 • Parents – file taxes early • Go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for a PIN any time • The PIN is needed as a signature on the Sign and Submit page • Many scholarships require FAFSA for financial aid • APPLY – even if you think you don’t qualify

How To Find College Scholarships • Go to Financial Aid and Scholarship link on the college’s website • Click on Freshmen Scholarship link • Read criteria and make a list of possible scholarships • Note all aspects of the application process including letters of recommendations, essays & transcripts needed

Regents’ Scholarship ProgramRequired Classes • 4 credits of English • 4 progressive credits of math • 3.5 credits of Social Science • 3 credits of lab-based Science courses to include: • Biology • Chemistry • Physics • 2 progressive credits of the same World Language during grades 9-12
Regents’ Scholarship ProgramQualifications For Each Award Base Award Exemplary Academic Achievement • $1000 one-time payment • Core course of study during 9-12 • Cumulative 3.0 GPA • No grade lower than a “C” in the required courses • One report of ACT test score • Renewable award worth up to $1,250 per semester (4 semesters) • Core course of study during 9-12 • Cumulative 3.5 GPA • No grade lower than a “B” in the required core courses. • Have an ACT score of 26
Regents’ Scholarship ProgramCollege Credits & Deferment • Approved concurrent enrollment courses worth 3 or more credits will be counted as 1 credit. • English 1010 • Math 1050 • An official college transcript is required as a part of the application even if the college course is listed on the high school transcript. • A deferment application (to put the scholarship “on hold”) is required for a student who will not attend college the Fall semester after graduating from high school.
