Sociology Sociology – the study of how people act within a society-how society affects people. The study of society itself. Examines group behaviour
What is a Social Institute? Social Institute – an organized way that a society develops to meet its basic needs. Example – Government, School, Healthcare, Church/places of worship, Prison systems
The Basic Five Institutes • Families • Economic • Political • Educational • Medical
Families • Add more people to the society; Make babies, adoption, artificial insemination, immigration to a different society, • Raise them to become contributing members of society • Nurture and love unconditionally
Economic • Any place where an exchange of money happens for goods and/or services (basic needs) • For example a restaurant, insurance, Toronto stock exchange
Political • To govern every aspect of society • Examples: taxes, limit or encourage the amount of kids you can have (baby boom), education systems, health care (huge impact in Canada)
Educational • To educate us to be able to contribute to society, supposed to set us up for our later life, it helps socialize us, place of knowledge and learning
Medical • To keep everyone in society healthy and functioning • Everybody pays for healthcare through taxes
