12 October, 1492 Dear Family, I’ve been sailing on a ship, floating on seas with Christopher Columbus. There are three ships sailing on the sea. The Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria. I’m sailing on the Santa Maria. The captain is Columbus. After long Columbus said we had 132 miles more, but no one could wait any longer. Everyone started complaining. After not long, we could here the quiet breeze again. Columbus cheered us on and told us lots. We kept waiting and waiting, and finally, we spotted land on the horizon. Everyone was happy, and so was I! We’ve been on this ship for so long and we can finally see land right before us and soon we’ll be able to walk on that land. When we arrived, we met the Tainos there. They were very friendly.
12 October, 1492 We gave some of our things to them and they traded things with us. Later on, we went back to our ships and the people of the island came to our ships using their boats and gave us more so we game them more, too. This is a large and flat island. It is green with many trees, but there are no mountains. Columbus called this island San Salvador, in honor of the Lord. The people here looked very poor. They weren’t wearing much, and their speech is very fluent. Some of the belongings they gave us were parrots, balls of cotton thread, spears, and many other things. We had spent a very long time on water, and we can finally walk on land again, in a new world! Love, Ersi B.
