The Montgomery Bus Boycott The Montgomery Bus Boycott began after Rosa Parks, a seamstress and member of the NAACP, refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white customer and was arrested. For close to a year, African Americans walked, rode bikes, and carpooled rather than ride the public bus system. Martin Luther King, jr. helped lead this protest and cemented his place as one of the key leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.
