  3. Basics • Named New Jersey • Founded by Giovanni de Verrazzano in 1524 • Formerly New Netherlands from 1643 to 1653

  4. Basic Geography • Between Hudson and Delaware rivers • Includes Atlantic Coastal Plain • Sandy Hook Bay to the south

  6. Lenni Lenape (Background) • Members of the Algonquian language group • Agricultural • Mixed diet

  7. Colonization • Destroyed first campsites in fear • Their land was traded for other items • Almost all wiped out through smallpox and guns

  11. Effect on Trade • Henry Hudson- A dutch explorer who founded Bergen in 1660 • The Hudson river was main trade route • In dutch Bergen means “shop” • Bergen was the first permanent trading post in New Jersey; founded by Henry Hudson

  16. Creation • Dutch trading post and Dutch claim on New World • 5 year farms given to people with alcohol and guns • People didn’t care about governments Colonists of New Jersey farming

  17. East and West Jersey • Land -> James, the Duke of York • James-> Sir George Carteret and John Berkely • They split into East and West Jersey • East Jersey = Quakers • West Jersey = Puritans
