HHRS Athletic Task Force

Presented on May 18, 2016, the HHRS Athletic Task Force provides recommendations to enhance and expand athletic opportunities, engage student athletes, improve facilities, and foster community involvement. Surveys and feedback guided the focus areas, and the Task Force suggests steps to generate early interest, develop relationships with elementary schools, improve facilities, and increase community engagement.

  5. Survey Where is interest? Two surveys were created and sent out to AHES and HES parents with students in grades 4-7 and one to HHRS coaches Response & Results The surveys generated responses and feedback that directed our focus on specific programs, early development and facilities Henry Hudson Regional School

What can we do… Invite 8th graders to visit the high school Pair up athletes and allow younger athletes to shadow older athletes Open the gym Have older athletes talk to younger students about their transition from middle school to high school Have varsity athletes speak to the elementary school kids and invite them to practice or play a game Alumni versus the students Fitness center first and foremost Have the coaches hook up with the rec departments for preseason clinics Invite 5th and 6th graders to come watch a game Let coaches go to the grammar school to talk about different opportunities available to them Henry Hudson Regional School

Generating early interest Fostering Future Success Early opportunities and developmental programs generate interest and provide a foundation for successful secondary school programs Studies have found that higher physical activity levels are associated with greater academic achievement among students Henry Hudson Regional School

Recommendations to the Board Athletics • Offer middle school Girls Soccer • Strongly consider offering /expanding: • High School Varsity Girls Cross Country (Fall) • High School Varsity Girls and Boys Spring Track • Explore options for high school boys and girls Lacrosse by seeking waiver from NJSIAA • Revisit Cooperative Agreement for 2017-2018 School Year Henry Hudson Regional School

Recommendations to the Board Engagement • Seek to develop relationships and interest with elementary school students through HHRS athletics: • Open communication with Coaches • Visits to schools by Coaches (and players) • Clinics leading into season for current (and potential) athletes run by Coaches • Off season/summer camps or programs with Coaches and athletes • Improve communication between Highlands and Atlantic Highlands Recreation Departments, and expand their relationship with HHRS • Evening event for all AHES and HES 5th and 6th graders to showcase academics and athletics Henry Hudson Regional School

Recommendations to the Board Facilities • Create an Ad Hoc sub-committee for facilities and fields for Athletics • Long range Athletic Plan for improvements of facilities and sporting options • Explore potential of new field construction in nearby locations • Continue plan/fund/build for a state of the art weight room • Determine feasibility of using Kavookjian Field for soccer through Borough of Highlands • Continue efforts associated with garage repairs; fence improvements and walkways to fields • Utilize the Education Foundation for donors and sponsorships for athletic projects • Promote athletic events through improved website and social media initiatives • Renewed commitment to engage and develop community school spirit and pride in HHRS Henry Hudson Regional School
