PBS What it is: A hierarchical breakdown of the products which depicts the entire system architecture. What it is not: A project schedule or a chronological listing An organizational hierarchy F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Logic layer structure proposed • Chinese box model in which boxes are also connected each other F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Each boxes constitute a layer in which components are connected in tree logic Storey 1 Detection Unit 1 SJB 1 Storey n Storey 1 Detection Unit n Storey n SJB n F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Why do we need to do this: • - To ensure all works needed are included • - To be sure that every body have the same view of the project • To serve as an efficient tool to converge to a consensus • and becomes inputs to • Define activities • Estimate cost • Plan risk management • Plan resources F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
What it must be: A list of components associated to requirements with identified and testable performances or characteristics A sufficient (with no over killing) and necessary description of the complete system What it must not be: A list ofprocesses or functions performed in the development of these products. Remark: This decomposition process MUST be iterative It cannot be a one shot effort F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Summarize Define a PBS will be more than “useful” to organize the project and it is an essential step in its development plan The list ofdeliverable products will also help to define The tasks to produce these components and the material And resources associated. F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009

3 possible examples of a storey F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Data needed for the QA implementation (1/2) • For each system/component • Definition • A description of the component/system • Functions • A definition of the functions to be performed by the component/system within the KM3NeT dector operation life F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Data needed for the QA implementation (2/2) • For each system/component • Requirements • A definition in measurable terms (including max, min and nominal values) of what must be done by the component/system to be acceptable to the function in the project: • Physical requirements • Power requirements • Structural/mechanics requirements • Enviromental requirements, i.e. undersea water depth, and other paramenter • Success criteria • A definition in measurable terms of what must be done for the component/system to be acceptable to the success of the project F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Data needed for the RA implementation • Layer by layer has to be given: • how many and what components constitute that layer (including design/reports and every useful specification) • design of the parts and number (including reports and every useful specification) • design of the connection and connectors between them (and if is possible a sketch of the system like) • the failure rate (if it was evaluated) and the way in which it was evaluated (test report, and FIT rate value related to each part) F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
Conclusions • Using such a tool will be useful to: • Have a global view of all proposals • Make parallel analysis between “same” object • Be sure that all components of the project will be take in account • It is recommended to implement the PBS with WP7 representatives F. Louis, J. Giraud IRFU/SEDI Paris, 23-02-2009
