The Conditional Tense • The conditional tense is used to indicate would in English. • ie…I would go shopping if I had enough time. • ie…Yo iría de compras si tuviera bastante tiempo.
The Conditional Tense 2. The conditional tense is also used to express possibility or probability in the past. ie…I wonder what time it was? ¿Qué hora sería? (in a question it would be translated as “wonder”, in a statement it would typically be translated as “probably”)
The Conditional Tense 3. The conditional tense is sometimes used to show politeness. ie…I would like to talk to Jon, please. Me gustaría hablar con Jon, por favor.
The Conditional Tense 4. The conditional tense is also used with if clauses. ch.9,11 If the conditional tense is used with a “si” clause, then the other clause must use the imperfect subjunctive. ie…I would go to the movies if I had a ticket. Yo iría al cine si tuviera un boleto.
Conjugating in the Conditional • The stem is the entire infinitive. • ie...hablar • 2. Add the regular conditional endings. (same as er/ir imperfect) • ía íamos • ías • ía ían
Irregular Verbs These verbs have irregular stems but regular endings in the conditional tense: caber cabr- querer querr- decir dir- saber sabr- haber habr- salir saldr- hacer har- tener tendr- poder podr- valer valdr- poner pondr- venir vendr-
Sentence Examples • Hablaría con mi hermana. • I would talk with my sister. • Juan bailaría el lunes. • Juan would dance on Monday. • ¿Podrían Uds. ayudarme? • Could you all help me?
