Catalyst Use the first 5 minutes of class to go over your homework problems with your table group. Check your answers against theirs, and make sure that you ask them any questions that you may have. When you have gone over your homework, make the following conversions using dimensional analysis: There are 2.54 cm in 1 inch 24 inches to centimeters 89.5 centimeters to inches 35.6 inches to centimeters 1234 centimeters to inches
24 in to cm 89.5 cm to in 35.6 in to cm 1234 cm to in
Vocabulary Section 10 pages from the back of your notebook I will give you a post-it note to stick onto the top of that page Vocabulary entries will be listed on the website First entry:
Dimensional Analysis Dimensional Analysis is a powerful problem-solving technique using conversion factors to move from one unit of measurement to a different unit of measurement.

Catalyst Make the following conversion using dimensional analysis: How many inches are in 2 miles? 36 inches = 1 yard 1 yard = 3 feet 5280 feet = 1 mile
Homework Discussion Each table group will be responsible for one problem. Complete the problem on the white board, using dimensional analysis. Box your answer when done.

The tallest living dog stands 1.23 yds from foot to withers. When standing on his hind legs, the dog, Zeus, is about 7.5 ft tall. Zeus weighs 11 stone. He eats about 12 cups of dog food a day. Using dimensional analysis, convert all of the measurements in the previous statement into either meters, kilograms or liters. 1 yard = 3 feet 1 foot = 0.3048 meters 1 stone = 14 pounds 1 pound = 453.6 grams 1 gram = 0.001 kg 1 cup = 8 ounces 1 liter = 33.814 ounces
Homework Discussion Take 5 minutes with your table group to discuss your Mump Population homework. After 5 minutes, I will display the answers I got.
Dimensional Analysis Quiz on Friday Open notebook. All dimensional analysis work must be shown.
Create a quiz question Your group will have 15 minutes to create a dimensional analysis question that you think would be appropriate for the quiz on Friday. The question must require the use of at least 3 conversion factors. Show all work on whiteboard AND a lined piece of paper, including how the problem will be solved. At the end of the class period, I will collect the lined piece of paper. It must include a heading with all group member names.
Homework • Use the Mump Island conversion factors from page 18 to solve the dimensional analysis problems on pages 20 and 21. • Quiz on Friday
TAKE OUT • Catalyst sheet • Pencil • Science notebook • Red pen
Catalyst Make the following conversion using dimensional analysis: How many pounds are in 89.87 milligrams? 1 milligram = 0.001 grams 1 gram = 0.001 kilograms 1 kilogram = 35.247 ounces 1 ounce = 0.0625 pounds
Notebook Check • Use a red pen. • Be honest, I will be checking the notebooks this weekend. If you were not honest, you will receive an FFB. • Give yourself partial points if a page is not fully completed. • Tape notebook check on the inside front cover of notebook and return notebook to shelf when finished.
