2. Introduction • Sarah Rees • Second year teacher and former student of Mariposa! • I have my bachelors in Early Childhood education. • I have two dogs and love reading, writing and music!

3. Specials • Monday – Computer Lab (45 min. once a week) • Tuesday-P.E.: Ms. Maack (45 min. once a week) • Wednesday-Music: Mr. Harnish (45 min. once a week) • Thursday-Art: Mrs. Murphrey (45 min. once a week) • Friday-Library: Ms. Boorse(45 min. once a week)

4. The First Few Weeks… • Functioning in a classroom setting • Adjustment to school routines • Understanding of “school language” • Emphasis on listening and following directions, personal space • Appropriate times to talk • Independence and Problem Solving

Mariposa is implementing a school-wide PBIS program • What is PBIS? • Positive Behavior Intervention System • Focuses on positive rewards for good behavior • Creates a plan for “teaching” appropriate student behaviors • Creates a plan to address undesirable student behaviors through teacher and administrative interventions • Lesson plans build on Mariposa LifeSkills • Consistency throughout the school • All staff expectations are the same, using the same language and the same series of rewards and consequences

BLAST BLAST • Be Respectful • Lead with Integrity • Act Responsible • Safety Matters • Together We Achieve • BLAST takes all the great programs and incentives Mariposa already has in place and ties them together! • School Store coupons (Blast Coupons) • Miss Manner certificates (Blast Coupons) • Principals Lunch • Lifeskills (all Lifeskills are imbedded within BLAST)

7. Classroom rewards/behavior • Blast tickets • Reinforce positive behavior • Clip up/Clip down chart • Moon Rock Jar • Table Puzzles • If necessary phone calls home and/or office referrals

8. Fine and Gross Motor Skills • Fine motor: Through writing, coloring, cutting, etc. (pencil grasp) • Gross motor: PE and recess

9. Curriculum • Opening:Unpack, morning announcements, attendance, alphabet chant, practicing name and HFW, word of the day.

10. Curriculum • Reading: (CKLA) Skills/Listening and Learning- Phonemic Awareness, sharing ideas, comprehension, Early Literacy Skills & Application, Guided Reading Groups, Daily Journals and Poems. Whole group and small group differentiated instruction. Class News and Modeled writing. • Math: Calendar, tally, number line, counting, place value, patterns, weather graph, Investigations and Cognitive Guided Instruction. Begins with manipulatives and progresses to pencil and paper activities along with Instructional Focus Groups. As .well as Math rotations.

11. Curriculum • Guided Reading Groups: Students participate in a variety of centers each day, daily journal writing, seatwork and my reading group. My guided reading groups are based on ability. All the centers are self managed and based upon objectives taught earlier in the day or week for reinforcement from the CKLA program. • Writing Activities: Individual and class books, journal topics, dictation, story starters, spelling, nursery rhymes and writer’s workshop. • CKLA Integrated Units: Nursery Rhymes & Fables, The Five Senses, Stories, Plants, Farms, Native Americans, Kings & Queens, Seasons & Weather, Columbus & the Pilgrims, Colonial Town & Townspeople, Earth, Presidents.

Computer Science Immersion Program Using the Power of Computers to Solve Problems • Students will learn fundamental computer science concepts and digital citizenship/internet safety practices, while developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills. • Integrated lessons and projects will be implemented during the Extended Learning block and weekly Computer Lab time • Combination of unplugged (hands-on lessons without a computer) and plugged lessons on the computer

14. Special Services • Speech/Language • Resource • Both are available to every child. We will contact if it is necessary. • SEI – Structured English Immersion

15. Testing • Classroom assessments: Letter Id, letter sounds and high frequency words. Number recognition, route counting and shape recognition. • DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) state mandated reading test • Given three times a year, fall, winter and spring • ELA and Math Interim testing four times a year. Preparing students to use the mouse.

16. Progress Reports • Conferences: Fall with parents only and Spring are student lead • Report Cards: January and May • Which follow the newly adopted Common Core Standards in reading and math.

17. Homework • Once a week on Friday’s and return by the next Friday. • It should take 20 minutes plus 10-15 minutes of reading • Reinforces skills • Teaches children responsibility and accountability • All of kindergarten homework is the same based on the curriculum taught through out the week.

18. Absences/Tardies • Please make sure to call and report absences to the office first. • Absence line 480-541-3803 • Request homework • Make sure be on time. It will set the tone for your child’s day if they are late!!!!!

19. Keeping Us Informed • Make sure your emergency and contact information is current. • To ensure your child’s safety please keep us informed of any changes regarding dismissal. • Changes need to be called in to the office or emailed to me THE DAY BEFORE. Not an email day of. In the case of my absence. Subs don’t have access to my email. • We can only release your child to people listed on their emergency card.

20. Birthdays • Invitations/Goodies/Party bags • We CANNOT, WILL NOT, DO NOT hand out birthday invitations at school. • This is a district policy, Please do not ask us to do so! Thanks  • Please take a look at our class directory. Make sure you have signed it. • In Class • We make a birthday book

21. Nutrition • Snacks • Smalland healthy that is separate from their lunch box!!! Please show them were your are putting it. Please put a name on it! • Consumed within 10 minutes • Water ONLY • Lunches • Can pay ahead and online • Lunch money in envelope. Write student’s & teachers name, what it’s for and place in your child’s purple folder.

22. Important “Stuff” • Astronaut of the Week • May bring in completed poster to share during their week only • Events - No fall party due to the Harvest Festival • Thanksgiving Feast • Winter party • Friendship Party • Field Trips- Through Donors Choose • End of Year Celebration not a graduation

23. Parent Volunteers • Classroom- starts in October. I’ll send out a request form on preferred days. It will be working with a small group of students or clerical work • Event Parents for parties
