  2. FACTS ABOUT THE AUTHORITY • STATE OF ALABAMA’S ONLY WATERSHED MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY • CREATED IN 1991 BY THE ALABAMA LEGISLATURE • MANAGEMENT OF 2,328,000 ACRES IN SOUTHEAST ALABAMA • WATERSHEDS COVERED: -CHOCTAWHATCHEE RIVER -PEA RIVER -YELLOW RIVER

  3. PURPOSE OF THE AGENCY • DEVELOP AND EXECUTE PLANS RELATING TO: • WATER CONSERVATION • WATER USAGE • WATER POLLUTION • WILDLIFE HABITAT PROTECTION • AGRICULTURAL AND TIMBERLAND PROTECTION • FLOOD PREVENTION AND CONTROL

  4. PURPOSE OF THE FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM • TO PROVIDE TIMELY, RELIABLE AND ACCURATE WARNINGS TO PERSONS ALONG THE CHOCTAWHATCHEE, PEA AND YELLOW RIVERS.

THE FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM • INSTALLED IN 1993 BY THE U.S. CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND THE WATERSHED MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY • CONSISTS OF 17 RAINFALL AND RIVER LEVEL GAUGES • LOCATED IN SEVEN COUNTIES • GAUGES ALONG THE RIVERS REPORT RAINFALL AND RIVER LEVEL CHANGES AS THEY OCCUR • DATA IS TRANSMITTED VIA RADIO SIGNAL TO COMPUTERS LOCATED IN ELBA, NEW BROCKTON AND GENEVA

  6. THE FLOOD WARNINGSYSTEM • RAINFALL IS REPORTED AT THE RATE OF .04 OF AN INCH • RIVER LEVELS ARE REPORTED AT ONE-INCH INCREMENTS • REPORTS ALL DATA TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA • NOTIFIES SYSTEM OPERATOR OF HIGH RIVER LEVELS VIA TEXT MESSAGES

  7. OTHER SYSTEM CAPABILITIES • FORECASTS RIVER LEVELS DURING FLOODING CONDITIONS • REPORTS UPDATED DATA TO THE STATE’S INTERNET SERVER IN MONTGOMERY • STORES AND GENERATES REPORTS OF HISTORICAL DATA • INCORPORATES DATA INTO AGENCY’S WEB SITE • <cpyrwma.alabama.gov>

FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM SPECIALIST • MAINTENANCE OF SYSTEM • REPAIRS AND MAINTAINS ALL EQUIPMENT • OPERATION OF SYSTEM • OPERATES SYSTEM DURING FLOOD THREATS • NOTIFIES EMA PERSONNEL AS TO POSSIBLE FLOODING • GENERATES REPORTS AS REQUESTED BY VARIOUS AGENCIES • MANAGEMENT OF SYSTEM • UPDATES THE SYSTEM COMPUTERS • MAINTAINS DATA BASE BACKUP
