Reformation Sunday 2017 500 Years
Luther had no doubts as to the existence of God. • God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all (1 John 1:5) • Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing (Habakkuk 1:13). • . . . all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). • For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it (James 2:10).
Luther’s Disgust with Rome • luxurious living • loose morals • cronyism • lack of interest in spiritual things
Not by Works Romans 3:20 - Therefore no one will be declared right with God in His sight by obeying God’s Law … Titus 3:4-7 - But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. Ephesians 2:8-9 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.
Sola Fide Romans 1:17 - In the gospel the way to become righteous in God’s sight is revealed. It tells us about a righteousness that comes to us is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “Those right with God will be made spiritually alive by faith.” Romans 3:22 - This rightness with God is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Romans 3:28 - For we maintain that a person is made right with God by faith apart from the works of the law.
Sola Fide Romans 5:1-2 - Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. Ephesians 2:8 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith . . .
Christ’s deity Incarnation Sinlessness Substitutionary death Burial Resurrection Ascension Exaltation We are saved by Christ’s works on our behalf. Solus Christus
Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. • Romans 4:4 - When someone goes to work for somebody, the wages he brings home are not a gift, they are a just compensation. Likewise, right standing with God is a gift we freely receive, not a wage for which we must work. Having God declare someone right with Himself is a gift God gives to the person who trusts Him and not his good works. • Ephesians 2:8- 10 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God . . .
Sola Gratia Ephesians 2:8- 10 - For it is by grace you have been saved . . . Romans 1:6 - And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were based on works, grace would no longer be grace.
“As soon as the gold in the casket rings; the rescued soul to heaven springs.”

Luther vs. Eck Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Soli Deo Gloria
Address to the German Nobility • He asserted that the pope has no authority over secular rulers. • He asserted that the state had the right to intervene in church matters if the church became corrupt. • The Pope and the entire hierarchy of the church are just as subject to the authority of the Scriptures as everyone else. • He denied that the Pope had the exclusive right to interpret the Scriptures.
The Catholic Church has seven sacraments. Luther wrote that the Catholic sacramental system was set up by men (not God) so the church could manipulate and control people it members. THE 7 SACRAMENTS: Baptism Communion Confession Confirmation Marriage Ordination Last Rites The Babylonian Captivity of the Church
The Freedom of the Christian • He writes to the pope stating that being made right with God comes not by works, going to church, participating in the sacraments, and the like. • Our justification comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. • It is the pope’s job to unearth these truths from under the ecclesiastical rubble.
Here I stand. I can do no other. Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Soli Deo Gloria
Augsburg ConfessionArticle IV: On Justification. The Scriptures teach that people cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ's sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor, and that their sins are forgiven for Christ's sake, who, by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins. This faith God imputes for righteousness in His sight. (Romans 3 and 4)
Soli Deo Gloria A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.
Soli Deo Gloria Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle.
Soli Deo Gloria And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us; The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.
Soli Deo Gloria That word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. A-men.
