Last time we talked about compound words. These words had more than one syllable. Syllables The syllable of a word is the beat of the word. The word sidewalk has two syllables because it has two beats.
Doubling Rule Words with one syllable, a short vowel sound and end in s ,l, f, or z follow a special rule. The s, l, f, or z are doubled. I will teach you a trick to remember which letters get doubled.
Just remember this sentence.... Sammy loves free zebras. free
Read the following list below and put them under the sound. doll chaff dress razz bass fuzz bill gaff /s/ /l/ /f/ /z/ doll bill gaff chaff fuzz razz bass dress
Find the words that need the last letter doubled in the list below. hot tos plan zag bad case seal fiz got him yel case pet did puf Did you find them all? They are: yell toss fizz puff Notice the word seal ends with /l/ but does not have a short vowel sound.

Compare and Contrast If you compare two things you tell how they are alike. If you contrast two things you tell how they are different. So, when you compare and contrast, you tell how they are alike and different.
A Venn diagram is a tool that people use to Help them organize when they are comparing and contrasting two things. A Venn diagram has two overlapping circles.
Where the circles overlap you write about how two things are the same. In the outside circles you write about how the two things are different.
