  9. Commas in Sentences A complex sentence is a simple sentence combined with a group of words that can not stand alone. It is joined with a comma and words such as if, because, as, or when. If you stay all day, put on more sunscreen. I will help, because it is hard to reach your back.

  10. Commas in Sentences Commas are used to set off introductory words or phrases that come before the subject in a sentence. Oh my, I lost one shoe. Getting in the car, I found my lost shoe. Once in a while, Henry comes for a visit. Yes, I am always happy to see him.

  11. Commas in Sentences Commas are used to set off introductory words or phrases that come before the subject in a sentence. Oh my, what will I do now? Getting in the car, I found my lost glove. Once in a while, Henry comes for a visit.

  12. Commas in Sentences Commas are used to set off parenthetical statements and appositives. These are statements that interrupt the flow of the sentence. If found in the middle of a sentence, commas come before and after. My teacher, as a matter of fact, told me about the book. My friend, of course, came to celebrate my birthday.
