Define ALL of the following words in your notes • Greenhouse Effect • Global Warming • Deforestation • Desertification • Acid Rain • Soil Erosion • Habitat Fragmentation • Invasive Species • Biological Magnification • Endangered Species • Pollutant
In your notes! In my own words… • Biological Magnification-
Biological Magnification https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP9hmlRqbxs • DDT is an insecticide that was used in the 1940s and is now illegal because can be cancer causing in animals (including humans) • Biological Magnification is how effects of DDT spread • Through the food chain (Trophic levels)
Biological Magnification • How would you explain it? • Put it into your own words in your notes.
Desertification • The 1930’s “Dust Bowl” in the Great Plains of the United States. • Presently desertification affects millions on almost every continent. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9RxnuBiFbg • Not the growth of deserts, but the drying out of fertile lands.
Desertification • How would you explain it? • Write it in your own words.

Soil Erosion • A problem for productive agriculture and water quality. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdg1lpQfLbo • How would you explain it, put it into your own words…
Habitat Fragmentation • Concerns are direct loss of habitat and also direct and indirect effects from the pipelines, roads, and other disturbances with the natural gas drilling sites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGBQFZHHKcc • How would you explain it? Put it into your own words
Endemic Species – A species that is unique and confined to a specific habitat. • Succession - the process of a ecosystem giving rise to plants and eventually wildlife. • Ozone depletion – A steady decline in the total volume of the Earth’s ozone in the stratosphere
Invasive Species • http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-threat-of-invasive-species/
Invasive Species in PA • The Black and Brown Rat:introduced to the U.S. in the middle ages from European shipping transports. • Asian Lady Beetle: introduced from Asia looks like a lady bug, but it bites. Ozone depletion • Ozone protects us from UV radiation (causes sun burn) • Decreasing the amount of ozone, increasing risks of the sun harming our skin. • It is depleted by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) human made chemicals. • CFCs are in aerosol cans, refrigerators, Air conditioners, and many more. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUfVMogIdr8
