  2. What Is AOIT? • Four-year program • Smaller Learning Community (cohort) • IT Theme • Affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF) • Only available to students assigned to AHS

Who Is It For? • 90 rising 9th grade students (only freshmen are admitted) • Students who are at grade level • Students who enjoy working with technology • Students who want • Life experiences while in high school • Career & College preparation • If performing arts is a priority, there are often scheduling conflicts and we ask that you only apply if AOIT will be first choice

  4. What Makes It Different? • Interdisciplinary approach to curriculum • Field trips – Project Based Learning • Workplace Readiness • Job Shadowing • Career Speakers/Fairs • Internship • Technology Integration – software and equipment • Cohort group – 90 students per grade

  5. AOIT at a Glance • Computer course sequence • Applications OR Programming • Students MUST complete one sequence

  6. Freshmen Year • Cohort courses (AOIT students & teachers) • English I (honors or academic) • World History (honors or academic) • Biology (honors or academic) • Principles of IT/MOS • Computer programming I (optional) • Math (some) • For English, science & social studies, honors and academic students are in the same class but have differentiated assessments.

  7. Freshmen Year • Advisory Board Speakers • Field Trips • Job Shadowing • NC Zoo in Asheboro • Coastal day trip • Follow-up video-conference with San Diego AOIT program

  8. Sophomore Year • Cohort courses • English II (honors or academic) • Earth science (honors or academic) • US History (honors and academic) • Multimedia & Web Design or C#

  9. Sophomore Year • Field trips • Teambuilding and Leadership Training (low ropes course) • Linville Falls and Caverns • Xtreme Beginnings – WCPSS Career Fair

  10. Junior Year • Cohorted courses • English III (honors and academic) • US History (honors and academic) • e-Commerce I or SAS Programming • Both Honors • Resume Preparation • Mock interviews • Internship preparation

  11. Internship • Required for AOIT graduation • Minimum 135 hours – 1 elective credit • Completed between junior/senior years • May start junior year, must be done by May of senior year • Involves the use of technology • Compensated • Assistance with finding placement, but responsibility is on student/parents

  12. Senior Year • e-Commerce II Honors (Video Production) or AP Computer Science – Java • English IV (honors and academic) • Civics & Economics (honors and academic) • Internship presentation • High ropes course • Senior banquet – AOIT graduation

  13. Electives and Extra-Curriculars • AOIT Electives: • AOIT Art I (9 – 12) • AOIT Speech II (11-12) • Students may take other electives such as AP, foreign languages, art, etc. • No conflicts with sports or clubs

  14. Advisory Board • Part of NAF model • Made up of volunteers from local businesses • Monthly meetings • Assist with internship placement • Serve as guest speakers, curriculum advisors, etc. • Provide other assistance as needed • Membership is open

  15. Academy Support Team (AST) • Parents, students, community members • Officers are elected • Volunteers welcome • Provide AOIT support • Fundraising - equipment • Social events

How To Apply • Application • Essay – completed by the student • Teacher emails for recommendations • Available 2/4, due 2/22 • Online atwww.apexhigh.com/aoit • Siblings of current or alumni AOIT students have priority, then a lottery is used to fill the 90 spots • All students who are on grade level, apply, and are assigned to AHS are in the lottery pool

  17. Timeline • Applications are due 2/22/13 • Recommendations sent to teachers • Official school assignment – 5/1/13 • After 5/1/13, AOIT lottery will be done with only students assigned to AHS • Notifications, including wait-list, will be sent by May3rd. • If you are participating in the final transfer period, please Email kmacdonald@wcpss.net

  18. Registration • Register as if NOT in AOIT • Include MS IT Academy as an elective • Schedules will be changed as necessary for AOIT course sections
