What is Summer Training • Summer training is a unique aspect of the Canadian Cadet Movement. • Cadets are offered the opportunity to live on a Canadian Forces Base for two, three or six weeks in order to attend courses which give them in depth knowledge on a variety of Cadet Program Specialties (Music, Drill, Aviation, Marksmanship). • Training is completed to enhance and build upon the experience offered to the cadet at their local squadron. • Courses range from the two week General Training (GT) Course & three Week Basic Specialty Courses to six week Instructor Courses.
Where do we Train? • Air Cadets in Ottawa-Valley region are given the opportunity to train at Cadet Training Centers based on many active Canadian Forces Bases and Stations: • Bagotville and Valcartier CTC both located in the province of Quebec • Greenwood CTC located in the province of Nova Scotia. • St-Jean CTC located in the province of Quebec. • Connaught CTC located in the province of Ontario
Courses • Courses are offered to Cadets based on the training level they will complete prior to the summer. • Most first year Cadets completing level one will attend General Training. • Fast tracked cadets have the opportunity to apply for more advanced courses due to accelerated training and age. • Courses are broken down into four categories: Familiarization, Basic, Instructor and National.
Familiarization Courses • Only one Famil Course: General Training. • Run in two week serials at Bagotville. • You must successfully complete level one training to apply for GT.
About GT • Again, most first year Cadets attend the General Training course. • The main intent of the course is to both introduce cadets to CTC life for future courses, and allow Cadets to explore the various specialist fields they can participate in for future training courses. • Course components include drill, aviation, music, marksmanship training, sports and fitness, adventure training and a Field Training Exercise.
The Basics • Three week, subject specific training courses to expose second year cadets to their chosen field of interest. Includes: • Basic Drill & Ceremonial (Valcartier, QC) • Basic Sports & Fitness (Argonaut, NS) • Basic Aviation (Greenwood, NS) • Basic Aviation Technology & Aerospace (Greenwood, NS) • Basic Musician (Valcartier (Mont St-Sacrement), QC) • Basic Pipes & Drums (Blackdown CTC, ON) • Basic Survival (Bagotville, QC) • Advanced Aviation Course (Greenwood, NS) • You must complete level two to apply for these courses.
Instructing the Instructors • Six week instructor courses designed to teach senior cadets how to be instructors and specialists at their home squadron on a specific subject. Includes: • Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor (Connaught) • Drill & Ceremonial Instructor (Greenwood) • Intermediate & Advanced Musician (Mont St-Sacrement) • Intermediate & Advanced Pipes & Drums (Mont St-Sacrement) • Survival Instructor (Greenwood) • Fitness & Sports Instructor (Argonaut) • You must complete Level Three in order to apply.
National Courses • Highly Competitive Courses which accept a small number of Cadets from across Canada. Application includes review of school grades, an essay, an interview and may include written tests. Applications closed for summer of 2019. Courses include: • Advanced Aviation Technical Course – Airport Operations (North Bay) • Advanced Aviation Technical Course – Aircraft Maintenance (North Bay) • Advanced Aerospace (St Jean, Quebec) • Glider Pilot Scholarship (Various Training Centers) • Power Pilot Scholarship (Various Training Centers) • International Air Cadet Exchange (Various Countries) • Must complete Level 3 at minimum.

CTC Life • Each CTC is different and offers different facilities and activities. • All CTCs will have a dining facility, accommodations, medical center a canteen (leisure area), sports fields, air rifle ranges, laundry facilities and more. • Cadets attending AATC course are staying in College Residence, which house up two cadets per unit. • Cadets at Connaught live in semi-permanent soft walled shelters which accommodate six to ten cadets each. • CTCs are organized into Squadrons or Companies, each hosting an individual course. • Each Squadron is made of 3-5 Flights or Platoons with 30-35 Cadets each. • Each Flight is Commanded by an Officer (OCdt to Lt) with three or four Staff Cadets (senior Cadets employed by the CTC) to run the Flight.
Daily CTC Routine • 0600 – Reveille (Wake Up) • 0610 – Personal Admin & PT • 0700 – Breakfast • 0800 – Inspection • 0830 – Start Training • 1200 – Lunch • 1300 – Training • 1700 – Dinner • 1800 – Personal Time • 2200 – Lights Out
Leave & Training Bonus • Training is Conducted Monday through Saturday, six days a week. • Parental visits are authorized during Sundays. • Depending on the CTC, overnight leave with parents may be authorized from Saturday Night after training until Sunday Night. • Cadets are not permitted off the CTC without a parent or guardian, unless participating in a CTC activity off base (museum tours, beach visits, etc.) • Cadets are permitted to attend religious services on weekends, escorted by CTC staff. • All Cadets attending any Cadet Summer Training course is paid a training bonus of $10 a day. (Maximum of $120 for two week, $180 for three week and $360 for six week courses)
Dates • Two Week Serials: (Serial A 8-19 Jul 19, Serial B 22 Jul-2 Aug 19, Serial C 5-16 Aug 19) • Three Week Serials: (Serial A 8-26 Jul 19, Serial B 29 July-16 Aug 19) • Six Week Serials: 8 Jul-16 Aug 19 • Each Squadron is usually only assigned one serial to send their cadets to training. However, exceptions can be made occasionally if a Cadet is not available for certain serials. Advise the squadron if there are any unavailable dates.
