  14. THIS DAY IN AVIATION • December 16 • 1928 — Lt. James E. Dyer, USN, wins Herbert Schiff Memorial Trophy for having the best record among Naval aviators for the year ending June 30, Dyer's record being 1,215 hours of flying without accident.

  16. THIS DAY IN AVIATION • December 16 • 1951 — The first helicopter powered by a gas-turbine engine flies successfully. • The Kaman K-225 uses a turbine that makes for a lighter, simpler, more powerful engine compared to a conventional piston engine.

  17. THIS DAY IN AVIATION • December 16 • 1960 — United Airlines Flight 826 (Douglas DC-8, N8031U) and Trans World Airlines Flight 266 (Lockheed Super Constellation, N6907C) collided in midair over Staten Island in New York City, killing all 128 on both planes and six on the ground.

  24. The United States Enters the War Britain, Russia and the US agreed that defeating Germany was the number one priority for the allies.

  25. The Strategy Japan would just be contained until Germany was defeated.

  26. The Strategy • Reasons to contain Japan until Germany defeated: • Germany more of an immediate threat • Industrial ability more feared • In war over 2 years and needed relief • Allies wouldn’t be able to put max effort in both Europe and Pacific

  27. Japanese Territorial Strategy • Japan needed to expand her territory to gain raw materials to become an industrial nation.

  28. Japanese Territorial Strategy • After Japan moved into Manchuria and China in 1939, the US and Britain embargoed all trade with Japan.

  31. Japanese Territorial Strategy • Two weaknesses with strategy: • Japan needed to import large quantities of raw materials – needed safe passage of shipping • Naval fleet would be spread over 6 million sq mi – needed to destroy US Pacific fleet

  32. Pearl Harbor • December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. • The primary purpose was to cripple the American Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

  33. Pearl Harbor • Japan’s needed to gain air superiority to attack Fleet with little or no interference. • Plan was to eliminate force by surprise attacks while aircraft was on the ground.

  34. Pearl Harbor • The attack was a complete surprise and the losses were staggering. • Japanese destroyed: • 96 Army / 96 Navy and damaged 159 aircraft • Only 6 Army fighters and 36 Navy aircraft got in the air

Pearl Harbor • The US suffered heavy losses in ships, airplanes, and personnel. • Navy: • 8 battleships lost or damaged • 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers • Personnel: • Navy & Marine Corps • 2,117 killed • 960 missing and 876 wounded • Army / Army Air Force • 226 killed • 396 wounded • Japan lost 28 planes & 64 men
