Why are we here? • Learn about current and relevant information from NYSED • Discuss current topics and best practices in ELA to enhance our collective learning about how to meet the demands of the Common Core • Determine areas of focus to best support the work we each do
News from NYSED • NTI- what is it? Network Teams and Network Team Equivalents (NTEs) are New York State's vehicle for implementing the reforms associated with Race to the Top and the Regents Reform Agenda. They are 3- to 15-person teams located around the state who work in close partnership with districts and schools to build the capacity of New York State educators around our school-based initiatives. Each school district in New York State can receive support from its Network Team or NTE to help implement the State's education reforms. • Orientation to the NTI Updates materials
Grades 9-12 (Public Consulting Group) • Odell Proficiencies as a primer • Explicit writing instruction missing from 9.1; more in 9.2 • Accountable Independent Reading- Homework • Close read, TDQs, and Annotation used heavily in lessons involving literary nonfiction • Romeo & Juliet- character development lens in module • Text selection • Rigor is about expectations, instructional effectiveness, and assessment practices • Making adaptations
