PS/SPS Days Roberto Losito/Oliver Aberle13th January 2004 How to get reliable PSB sieve and PS&SPS dumps for 2006?
Overview • Internal dumps • Sieve • Beam stoppers • TIDVG • Summary PS/SPS days
PS internal dumps • Installed dump 47 operational (control unit problems) • Dump 48 mechanically ok • Spare in radioactive storage, control problem? • Transportation problem solved, lifting device will be tested these days • Working space (bunker, INB) found by R. Brown, ready within 3 weeks PS/SPS days
PS internal dumps • Dump 48 mechanically updated • Water bellows to be changed • Water and electrical connectors to replace • Cabling to be replaced • Power supply to be changed • Check capturing magnet • Test intensively • Standardise control units • Reference dump PS/SPS days
PS internal dumps • Installed dump 47 stays • Installation of dump 48 • Upgrading of spare dump • Depending on schedule start up with dump 47 or replacement of dump 47 by spare dump • Upgrading of dump 47 • New supports to simplify the alignment procedure PS/SPS days
PS Sieve • Working since 1977 • Originally designed for 1 mio. cycles, which has been reached in 1981 • Material Graphite • Movement with air pistons • Water cooled • Not working reliably • No spare parts! PS/SPS days
PS Sieve • Short term (2005): • Demount sieve from the machine • Maintenance on mechanical parts(Piston, water and air connections, bearings) • Adjust air and waterpressure after lab tests • Reinstall sieve PS/SPS days
PS Sieve • Long term (2006/2007): • Prepare two additional units with small design changes • Re-use vacuum tank or build new modified vacuum tanks? • Replace Graphite with CFC • Replace sieve actually installed • Prepare one complete spare unit PS/SPS days
PS beam stoppers • 33 stopper in the PS complex • Different types • Stoppers in good general condition • Take stock of spare components • Annual maintenance of installed stoppers PS/SPS days
SPS TIDVG • Internal beam dump • Length 4.5m • C / Cu / Al / W core • 22 tons cast iron shielding • water cooled • vacuum temp. measurement • vertical deflection PS/SPS days
SPS TIDVG • Ti foils to prevent from C particle contamination • Ti foil stretched over dump core materials • 5 foils with overlap, not closed • Each foil end is lifted PS/SPS days
SPS TIDVG • Damaged Ti foil • Length of damage:30 mm • Height of foil displacement:10 mm • Position: End of first foil/ circulating beam PS/SPS days
SPS TIDVG • Proposed modification: • Tests on graphite blocks covered by Ti foil (10-15mm from the edge). If successful • remove all Ti foils by cutting with special tool on spare TIDVG. • Same intervention on spare core • Modify the spare cast ion body of the TED to get a full spare TIDVG • Store the damaged TIDVG as back up • Installation of modified dump in April 2005 PS/SPS days
Summary • PS Dumps: Two upgraded dumps ready for startup 2006, spare in stand by. • PS sieve: 3 month to maintain the existing sieve, construction of a spare on the same design principle (in 2006). • PS beam stoppers: Inventory and annual maintenance, spare stoppers for 2006/07. • TIDVG: “Light” solution for time, manpower and budget reasons. Reinstallation within 3 months. Preparation of spare 2007. PS/SPS days
