Proposal • Start with ultimate goal • Helps me focus • Gives me motivation • Why interested in ferroelectric nanodots? • Possibility of increasing density 5 times greater than today’s capabilities • Never before experimentally seen vortex state • Never been grown before using MBE • Device possibility • Good selling point for industry
Proposal • Next steps… • Major points of outline • Uncertainties and gaps in knowledge • How to develop reasonable ideas to test? • What is or isn’t reasonable to put forth? • How do I make sure that I make this my own ideas? • Salamo – grow the MBE dots • Didn’t tell me how • Zhao has helped considerablly • Bellaiche – theoretically shows what I want to see
MBE Growth Training • Do I have to push all the buttons to claim I grew something? • Execution vs idea • Learning MBE is difficult • Want to be able to do it on my own • Each step seems relatively easy, and I get bored of doing it over and over • However, if I’m not there, it’s like I don’t gain trust of Zhao • Don’t want to waste time
MBE Upgrades • Lambda-Eurotherm Cables • Important connection that needs to be reliable; otherwise if we loose control in the middle of growth • Vampire connection • Small contact area • Strain relief should keep it in place • Don’t like it; seems too flimsy • Cannibilize 25pin premade serial cables • How to decide which to use? • Dave agreed with me • Wanted to ask Dick
MBE Upgrades • Lambda-Eurothermtest • What is safe? • Power supplies don’t have a load on them • What should I be concerned about? • Dave thinks it okay just to increase temp on eurotherm and see if lambda increases power • Could hook up wire to degas module • What I would opt for as it seems safest since it’s how it would be really used
XPS Evaluation • MgO • Correlate surface roughness to composition • Need to know percentages of each element I detect • Obtaining only surface is still important • That is what we grow on and affects growth
LAO • According to Tchakhalian, can’t be made atomically flat • “because of its R3C symmetry resulting in numerous macro twins (domains) seen on the surface even by naked eye” • Don’t know what R3C symmetry is • Could easily validate this by looking • Does this invalidate a buffer layer approach • Get the feeling that this is an intrinsic property of the material • Do I have to have atomically flat for dot formation? • Chemical etching results in creating a set of grooves of various orientations in twins
