  3. Common Core Standards • Newly adopted this year and making necessary transitions. • Common Core = Less standards but more in-depth and higher order thinking. • http://www.corestandards.org/

  4. Curriculum Maps What is a curriculum map? How does it guide the instruction?

  5. Responsibility Shift • 4th grade is the year of changes • Students become more independent and responsible for their own actions • Academic rigor and pace increases

  6. Daily Schedule • Daily Bite • Subjects: • Reading (Spalding) • Science • Math • Writing • Social Studies • Specials: • Twice a week: Music, PE, & Computers • Once a week: Library • Art and technology taught within subject matter

Lesson Formats • Powerpoints and/or manipulatives to provide key information and visuals • Notebooks (wirebound or composition) • Table of contents • Interactive diagrams, cut outs, etc. • Teacher modeled note taking • Independent practice • Checked/graded weekly • All other assignments submitted separately

Reading • Curriculum based on Common Core Standards and 4th Grade Curriculum Map • Spelling based on Spalding program • Grammar taught within reading and writing • Reader’s Workshop: idioms, fables, folktales, poetry, and myths • Students will also participate in a few Novel Studies throughout the year (whole class and/or small group)

Writing • Curriculum based on Common Core Standards and 4th Grade Curriculum Map • Students learn to write by using a Writer’s Notebook to generate ideas and take notes on different writing strategies • Students write a variety of texts, including memoir, fiction, non-fiction, and literary analysis

Math • Curriculum based on Common Core Standards and 4th and 5th grade Curriculum Map • Harcourt math books used as supplement • Students will be split into two groups based on NWEA Math test results (Letters will go home tomorrow) • Expect math homework daily unless a test was given that day (Reteach and Practice)

  12. Math • Five Easy Steps (FES) Program: • Daily Math Review • Mental Math • 3 Different Concept Problems • Error Analysis • Reflection • Problem Solving • Poster Friday • Multi-step problem • Independent and Small Group • Mathematical reasoning/discourse

  13. Social Studies • Curriculum based on AZ State Standards and 4th grade Curriculum Map (Common Core standards in development) • Main focus AZ History • Textbook, The Arizona Story, by AZ Historical society • Students will take a field trip relating to social studies: Arizona State Capitol

  14. Science • Curriculum based on Common Core Standards and 4th grade curriculum map • Major focus: Weather, Living Things, Magnetism and Electricity, Earth’s Processes, and The Scientific Method

  15. Specialized Study Program (SSP) • After lunch (Mon – Thurs) • Small group instruction • PACE students attend PACE at this time twice a week • Develop/practice skills • Catch up on current class work

Homework • Monday through Thursday (minimum of 40 min.) • Daily assignments: • read for 20 minutes (sign reading log) • 1 reading graphic organizer • 1 spelling graphic organizer (use weekly spelling list) • 1 page of math (reteach and/or practice) • If students do not finish their in-class work, this may become homework as well in order to not have missing or late assignments. • Occasionally, there may be long term projects that students need to work on at home (i.e. book report etc.).

PRIDE Program • In-class monetary system: “Ledgers” • Blue PRIDE tickets exchanged for ledger money (1 ticket = $10) • Students are paid for class work, homework, class jobs, good behavior etc. • Students lose money for not showing PRIDE. • Students purchase extra supplies from a class store (donations are appreciated). • Students learn to budget and pay rent monthly for using desks, chairs, and textbooks.

  18. How to succeed in 4th grade: • Be willing to take risks in learning • Be responsible • Be organized • Participate in class • Use time wisely • Make homework a priority
