Education Unit The PPA Evidence Binder Resources for assistance and support • Your Supervising Practitioner • Your University Supervisor • Practicum Handbook • www.fitchburgstate.edu/edunit Practicum/Licensure >Resources >Forms Library >Practicum Forms >PPA Evidence Samples • Ann Hogan, ahogan@fitchburgstate.edu • Jason Miles, jmiles6@fitchburgstate.edu
Education Unit Goals today • Review PPA components – 3 parts • Cover page • Evidence pages • Summary Decision Page • Review resources available for building evidence binder • Explore types of evidence appropriate for the demonstration of competency on Standard indicators
www.fitchburgstate.edu/edunit Practicum/Licensure >RESOURCES >Forms Library PPA Part One – Cover Part I Full legal name Complete address with city, state and zip code Course number for Practicum (not CRN number) Total Number of Practicum Hours and number in full responsibility • transfer from Documentation of Practicum Hours form - can be estimated at end of practicum if visits are complete Part III Get license or MEPID number of your supervising practitioner now Prior to submission with licensure packet, check that all initials, signatures and dates are included.
PPA Part 3 – Summary Decision Page Completed at the end of your practicum. Ratings from individual Standards are transferred by University Supervisor to Summary Decision Page and signatures with dates are entered. Prior to submission with licensure packet, check that all initials, signatures and dates are included.
Part 2 – Evidence pages and Binder Addresses the 5 Professional Standards for Teachers Standard A – Plans Curriculum and Instruction Standard B – Delivers Effective Instruction Standard C – Manages Classroom Climate and Operation Standard D – Promotes Equity Standard E - Meets Professional Responsibilities Organization of the Binder – can be organized by standard or by type of artifact. This is your personal preference, in agreement with University Supervisor, and must be organized in a clear and consistent way
Part 2 – Evidence pages and Binder continued Guidelines page 33-35 • 2 pieces of evidence for each indicator (Standard B will have 34) • Valid, direct and indirect • Practicum/Internship Evaluation Report cannot be used as evidence because it is same document as the PPA, but with each indicator rated, rather than just the Standard • Candidate Disposition cannot be used as evidence – this assessment is received at the final meeting, after completion of the PPA • License Specific Evaluation Questions can be used for Standard B2c only • See pink pages and website for suggested evidence for each Standard • Evidence needs to be organizedand presented in a way that clearly shows the evaluator how the evidence demonstrates competency of the standard (goldenrod pages)
Part 2 – Evidence pages and Binder continued • One document can be used to demonstrate competency for several indicators; keep in mind that the binder should demonstrate quality of performance and depth of thought throughout the practicum experience • Include only evidence gathered from your time in the practicum • Fully describe the piece of evidence: • Lesson Plan #3 dated…. • Observation Report #2 dated… • Student Work, name of activity • Journal Entry, subject of journal entry and date • If creating a document, be specific. “Staff Handbook” or “Internet Policy” is not adequate evidence that you have demonstrated the competency. What did you do with the Handbook/Policy that demonstrates that you have met the competency? • Photos, if used, must include a description of what is being represented and be used sparingly. No more than one photo per indicator.
Part 2 – Evidence pages and Binder continued Special circumstances and suggestions for meeting that Standard indicator(s) 1) No students on IEPs on your classroom roster Standard A, indicator 8 2) No ELL students on your classroom roster Standard A; Standard B – indicators 2g, 2h; Standard D - indicator 5 Plan for all potential populations on your lesson plan (Adaptations). If you have no ELL students or students on IEPs, create a “case study” student and always plan for that student when creating lesson plans, instructional materials and the classroom environment. 3) School uses prescribed curriculum for some content areas If the lesson planned and observed is from a prescribed curriculum, indicate that on your lesson plan and be sure to be observed teaching a lesson that is not from a prescribed curriculum • Standard A – Planning instruction • Standard B – Delivering instruction
Evidence Binder Activity – 5 groups Review the indicators in your Standard – summarize the competencies that must be demonstrated Select one of the most challenging indicators for your Standard What sources of evidence did you find? • Pink pages in the Practicum Handbook • Sample pages from the edunit website • Other ideas of sources from the group • Lesson Plan Rubric and Observation Report • Note the variety of evidence used • Note the way the evidence is cited • Reconvene to share group’s thoughts with your colleagues
Part 2 – Evidence pages and Binder continued Parting Guidance… • Have Evidence Binder available at every University Supervisor visit • Enlist the guidance and support of your supervising practitioner • Keep your evidence binder for at least 3 years
