  2. Response to Changes in Core Curriculum • Math and Physics training is absolutely essential to APh majors; therefore, option to require Ma 2&3 (current Ma 2ab) and Ph 12abc • to maintain rigor • Ph2 may be substituted by petition for good cause (i.e. changing major) • Proposals which follow to be discussed & voted upon by APh faculty.

  3. Stat-Mech & Thermo • Currently require APh 17abc • Significant overlap with Ph12c, APh 105ab, and Ph 127ab. • Uprevise/relabel APh 17 to become a junior level and 1st yr graduate elective • Recommend Ph12c in sophomore yr and “new” 1-2 term course, APh 85/105, for junior yr. focused on thermo & stat mech.

  4. APh 9 vs APh 109 • APh 9 is too challenging for frosh • APh 109 is too easy for grads • Solution: Recommend APh 9 shift focus to fabrication techniques, while APh109 integrate more of the fundamentals into the syllabus • Prof. Troian is helping as co-instructor for APh 109 this term. • EE majors can now use APh 9 or APh109 to satisfy requirements (higher enrollment in 109).

  5. Increasing APh Enrollment • APh to offer a new frosh pizza class (APh 1). • Each week, faculty will speak about their research activities, as in APh 110. • MOSH and APh faculty to schedule regular option tea each year.

  6. E10 & E11 • Recommend additional choices for required scientific communication courses: • Oral: E10, Ay30, Bi24, ChE126, Ch90, En84, Ge109, Ma10, or Ph70 • Writing: E11, Ay31, Bi24, CNS/Bi/Ph107, En84, Ge13, Ma11, or Ph70 • Expanded choices to grant greater freedom within option.

  7. Miscellaneous Items • Urge Physics to keep improving Ph3 • Work with Physics to ensure Ph 125 is taught at level appropriate for APh juniors/seniors • 94% participation of APh majors in research activities. - Add web page to APh web site listing available research openings for APh majors
