  1. Community WorksThe Road to Adult Life

  2. Community Works addresses these important transition questions: • What will a student’s day look like when RRISD is no longer providing services? • What will the student’s transportation plan be? • What services will be provided by agencies?

  3. Once all high school credits have been earned, the need for further transition goals will be assessed. Community Works is a collaboration among: students, parents, agencies, and RRISD staff to increase student independence in the community.

  4. Community Works empowers all students to strive for independence in employment and life. Mission Statement

  5. Community Works Students • Have completed graduation credit requirements. • Are 18 years of age or older. • Are maintaining competitive employment. • Are developing greater independence in the areas of careers, transportation and self-advocacy.

  6. Community Works offers: • transition assessments to develop goals for increasing independence in the community. • opportunities for enhancing employment skills for competitive employment. • focus on the student’s strengths, preferences and interests. • job coaching as needed.

  7. Develops goals and objectives for approval by an ARD committee. Determines the length of services. Possible goal: Establishing a transportation plan for adult living. Transition Assessment

  8. High School: An established class schedule Classroom-based Instruction focused on earning credits District offers transportation to and from school Community Works: A flexible schedule based on individual goals Community-based Focuses on adult life after RRISD Students, parents and staff work together to facilitate accessing transportation How does Community Works differ from high school?

  9. Student Responsibilities • Maintain employment • Exhibit age-appropriate responsibilities and behaviors • Access transportation in the community • Participate in transition planning meetings

  10. Parent Responsibilities • Support the goal of employment • Support students as they learn to access their own transportation • Participate in regular transition planning meetings • Reinforce skills and encourage independence

  11. Community Works Responsibilities • Facilitate transition planning • Work with students and families to access agency support • Support students in the workplace • Encourage independence and self-advocacy • Assist students and families in developing a transportation plan

  12. Developing Community Connections Provides information and links to community activities and agencies: • Community Rec Center, YMCA or gym • ACC Classes or other adult learning opportunities • Special Olympics for adults • Austin Resource Center for Independent Living (ARCIL) • Arc of the Capital Area • Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) • Bluebonnet MHMR or Austin-Travis Co. MHMR

  13. Final Destination The students’ last day of Community Works will look like the first day of the rest of their lives.
