  5. Annual Picnic & Scrimmage Joy Fuhrman and Melissa Carabin will be in charge of this event. Monday, Sept. 8th (4-7PM) VB & FB scrimmages then BBQ dinner

  6. ATHLETIC INFORMATION • Please sign up for the newsletter by sending an email to: • mboyer@ahisd.net ----girls The newsletter will include reminders for athletics, schedules, paperwork, request for volunteers, etc.

  7. PAPERWORK NEEDED To participate in UIL sports you will need the following: • Physical from a Doctor on the correct UIL form • Due: before participation in any tryouts/workout. • AHISD 24 hour code of leadership form. • Will be handed out the first week of school (3part) • AHJS Athletics Guidelines and information. • Available on the AHJS Athletic web page in August 2014 • Parents and students have read the AHISD Athletic Standards. • UIL rules acknowledgement form • UIL concussion acknowledgement form • Sudden Cardiac Awareness UIL form

Eligibility • First 6 weeks will be a UIL grade check. • Report card every 9 weeks. • Progress report every 3 weeks to regain eligibility. • What is passing? 70 or above in all classes. • Waiver for advanced classes (GT or HS credit). • Can only use once a year for one class. • After school detention for no homework- new policy might affect practice or game attendance.

TRYOUT PROCEDURES • During tryouts the following drills, court play, and attributes will be observed and scored: • Vertical Jump Test- Athletes will do a standing vertical jump. • Forearm Passing (Bump) – Passing to a target using the correct form while moving in a figure-8 pattern around two cones that will be 8’ apart. Each athlete will get 10 balls to pass. • Serve Test – each athlete will attempt five serves. Illegal or out-of-bounds serves score no points. Serves may be overhand or underhand, but the form grade will be one point higher for overhand serves. • Hitting with approach/down ball– Athletes will hit five down balls from behind the 10-foot line from a toss by one of the coaches. Only balls going over the net and hitting inbounds will score points. Athletes will have the option of advancing to hitting off a tossed ball, with an approach during this test. • ½ Mile Run - Run 800 meters on the track for time. Score is based on best time. Score out of 10 points is based on best time for grade level.

TRYOUT continued • Court Play – 3 on 3, 6 on 6 and drills involving passing, setting, hitting, serve receive, and base and free-ball. • Miscellaneous – Other important factors will be observed and scored during the tryouts. Some of these factors consist of effort, coachability, hustle, attentiveness, promptness, teamwork, and ability to follow directions. • 100 points are possible for the entire tryout process. 50 points come from 1-5 above, each being worth 10 points. The second 50 points comes from 6 & 7 above. Setting will be looked at as a skill during drills. • The coaches will observe and rate each athlete’s form during each of these skill drills. Each athlete will earn a score based upon her performance in each of these categories. Those with the highest totals (scores of all categories) will be selected for the 2013 Blue/Gold/ White Volleyball Teams. • Anyone who does not make the team will be placed in off-season during their athletic classes.

Daily expectations • Dress out in PE Clothes or practice attire. • Shoes- designed for sport or running. • Sweats- for inclement weather days. • Water bottle. • Knee pads. • No jewelry and hair up. • No cell phone use in locker room (RED ZONE). DISCIPLINE SYSTEM- • Warning • Call from student • Call from Coach • Contract for Athletics • Discipline referral & Work Ethic grade to a U for semester.

  12. What is Off- Season? If you are not currently on a “team” you will do workouts during athletic period. This class is held outdoors most days. • This group is titled “Off-season”. • Workouts will include but are not limited to: • Weight lifting • Running or conditioning workouts • Agility & cross fit workouts/challenges • Speed and power training • Core strength training • Instructions on injury prevention and stretching • Preparation for next season/sport

  13. TEAM LEVELS AND PHYLOSOPHY To develop individual and team skills to a competitive level in preparation for participation in high school sports. Individual skill level, attitude, attendance, team dynamics and coachability will determine team placement and playing time. • Volleyball will have 3 teams for each grade level. • A team- Blue • B team – Gold • C team- White ** schedule will be TBA The three levels of teams are designed to allow each athlete to compete at the appropriate level for they’re current skills and knowledge as determined by the coaching staff.

  14. SPORTS SCHEDULES Volleyball- • Begins: August 25th, first game – Sept. 4th • Ends: Last game is SAT. November 8th. • Basketball- • Girls: Nov. – Feb. tryouts will begin on Thursday, November 13th. • Tennis- Dec. – Feb. (contact Coach Nicole Osborne) • Track- March & April

  15. PARENT VOLUNTEERS • EACH TEAM WILL NEED TEAM PARENTS FOR THE FOLLOWING: • PLAN ANY SPECIAL EVENTS. (attend UIW VB match) • ORGANIZE CONCESSION STAND WORKERS. • (for all home games for that grade level) • ORGANIZE AND PREPARE TEAM SNACKS FOR GAME DAYS. • (for all games all 3 teams/can be split up or shared) • Every parent will be asked to work one shift in the concession stand during the season.

  16. COMMUNICATION REQUEST • When questions or concerns arise: • Encourage your child to speak with the coach directly. • Contact the appropriate coach as soon as possible • Email is the best way during the school day. • Request a short meeting with the coach. • Please avoid before and after games to avoid interruption with coaching duties and supervision. • If you are not able to get a response or resolution please contact Michelle Boyer next.

  17. Answers from questions asked during in the parent meeting • First day of school- 7th grade (1st period) will NOT dress out for class. Only after school tryouts. • Tryouts should be completed by Friday, Aug. 29th. • Kids will all get a tryout number on Monday or Tuesday. All list will be posted by number on: • Michelle Boyer’s teacher web page for 8th grade. • Jackie Moore’s teacher web page for 7th grade. • If either grade level needs to we will have call back list in smaller groups for before or after school tryouts. All kids who choose to will tryout during the athletic periods every day. • 7th grade tryouts will be after school on Monday and in the am the remainder of the week. • AM drop off will always be at 6:40 am (not earlier please, that is when building is opened) • Parent volunteers are needed. Please contact Michelle Boyer at mboyer@ahsid.net if you want to volunteer for anything.

Questions continued • Game uniforms are provided. • Transportation to games is provided and all girls are asked to ride the bus with the team both to and from the games. • Pick up should always be in the rear of the school by the gyms (in the circle drive). • Please be prompt when picking up child after practice and games. Coaches are required to stay until all kids are picked up. (within 15 minutes would be our request). • Practice schedules will be given to kids to make the team once tryouts are completed. • If you participate in out side of school sports or activities that might conflict with the schedule please notify a coach in writing (email works great) ASAP, before tryouts are completed. • If you are in athletics and do not want to tryout for volleyball that is OK. Just come during the class period each day. Dress-out for class will begin the second day of school for those not trying out. • If you have additional questions or would like to be added to the email list for girls athletics, email Coach Michelle Boyer. • mboyer@ahisd.net
