BYOD Parent Meeting2013-2014 Vaughan Elementary 4th and 5th grades
What is BYOD? • BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device • A “device” is defined as any tablet, e-reader, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini. • Internet enabled devices that can connect to the district’s wireless network is recommended, but not required
Why BYOD? • Assists student learning experience • Student choice in their learning style and needs (differentiation) • Student engagement • Learning beyond the classroom space • Allows for more small group teaching and learning
How will the devices be used in the classroom? • Projects • Research • Response device for assessments • Presentations • Access to fiction and nonfiction books online • Edmodo, a secure social website where students will be able to retrieve and submit assignments
What is Edmodo? Edmodo at a Glance
What are the responsibilities of the student? • Use of device is determined by the teacher • Students should only use device for the purpose of the activity put forth (for example, research) • If device is being used for other reasons (games, not an educational purpose) it can be taken away • While communicating on educational Internet sites, students must treat everyone with respect; just like in a classroom setting (digital citizenship will be discussed in class) • Students are responsible for his/her own device • Students should have devices charged and ready to use
What if a child doesn’t have a device to bring to school? • Not every child will have their own device. • The District will provide access to the internet via classroom computers and laptop carts. • Students may collaborate with another student as appropriate.
What is acceptable use of the device? • Students may only access the internet using the CCSD BYOD wireless network. • Students may use their devices when under the supervision of a BYOD teacher. • Students may not use their devices during state or district testing. • When the device is not planned on use, it must be turned off
What constitutes inappropriate use? • Using devices to record, transmit, or post photos or videos to Facebook, Youtube, etc., • Taking pictures of students and sending to friends • Using the device for purposes other than education
Other information you need to know • Every student who participates in BYOD will need to read and sign a student/parent user agreement that will be turned into your child’s homeroom teacher • The student is responsible for their device at all times (cases or covers are recommended) *Cobb County is not liable for stolen, lost or damaged devices • Student is responsible for proper care of device • When the device is not planned to be used, students must turn off device
The school reserves the right to inspect a student’s personal device if there is a reason to believe that the student has violated Board policies, administrative procedures, school rules, or has engaged in other misconduct while using their personal devices AND any violation of policies, procedures, or rules may result in the loss of use of the device
Thank you for coming tonight and please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. At Vaughan, we envision a learning environment where technology is a part of us, not apart from us.
