  3. When do we use the Pluperfect tense? • To talk about actions thatended before or by a specific point in time in the past. • El sábado pasado yo ya había terminado el trabajo de investigación. (By) last Saturday I had already finished the research paper. • La clase había hecho muchos ejercicios antes de la prueba. The class had done many exercises before the test.

  4. II. To talk about actions thathappened or ended before another action in the past. • La profe ya había pasado la lista cuando yo llegué a la clase. The teacher had already taken attendance when I arrived to class. • Ellos ya habían visitado a sus abuelos cuando Carlos tuvo el accidente. They had already visited their grand parents when Carlos had the accident.

  5. Like the present perfect tense the pluperfect is a compound tense that requires two verbs: the imperfect of haber+past participle

Más ejemplos: • Antes de llegar Julio, mis hermanos habían dominado la conversación Before Julio arrived, my brothers had dominated the conversation • Ambrosio siempre había tenido buenas relaciones con Carmen pero luego se pelearon Ambrosio had always had good relations with Carmen, but then they had a fight

  7. ¡Para! • Remember that in compound tenses you must obey the following rules:

  8. I. The auxiliary verb haber and the past participle always kept together (any negative word or pronoun is position before the for of haber) • ¿Habían enviado tus padres la tarjeta postal antes de salir para Tijuana? • No, nolahabíanenviado.

  9. II. Haber must agree with the subject • Ana siempre me habíacaído bien hasta ahora • Tú siempre me habías caído bien hasta ahora • Ellos siempre me habían caído bien hasta ahora

  10. III. The past participle always stays the same • El pollo me había caído bien hasta ahora • Los mariscos me habían caído bien hasta ahora • Las manzanas siempre me habían caído bien hasta ahora • La pizza siempre me había caído bien hasta ahora
