So what is procurement anyway? Procurement is a process which encompasses thefull life cycleof the asset or service contract. The ‘life cycle’ is the periodfrom the initial definition of the businessneed throughto the end of the useful lifeof the asset or service contract. It is about securing services and products that best meet the needs of users and the local community in its widest sense. Reducing costs and ensuring value for money

Category Management Business wide process covering expenditure with providers and contractors An agreed framework for managing specific areas of expenditure to identify the most appropriate and effective approach to future sourcing Increasing the value provided by the supply chain Working in partnership with directorates to provide cost effective solutions to requirements Not a cost cutting exercise, but it is a VFM exercise, including reducing costs
Supplier Management Formalised, proactive and robust way of managing, monitoring and developing supplier performance It is embedded in the contract but is concerned with the overall supplier relationship rather than around a specific contract Way of continuously working with suppliers to improve performance & value
