VELO-installation++ activitiesSeptember 6, 2007 • General items • Detector installation plans VELO
General • A- and C-detector halves are ready in assembly lab. • All TELL1’s are installed in D3 and being tested • Connectorizing of analog cables + testing finished this week • HV-cabling + testing finished this week • LV-work is ongoing D3 A-side VELO
Control and readout of a dummy module (slice test in the • pit) is making good progress. • Programming of motion-PLC at CERN first week of • October by MvB+PdG • Some external level measurements by E.J. + Raphael (end • of Sep. / early Oct.) • Magnet test during first 2 weeks of October: • - beforehand clean the area (service rack, heaters, ???) • - restricted access • - proposed VELO-activities: • * measure magnetic field at turbo’s • * check motion • * check operation of LVDT’s ?? • ECS/PVSS work to be done for FSM of motion, vacuum and • cooling by FS and APC. States need to be defined by • experts soon. VELO
PT100-cabling mystery of RF-boxes needs to be solved. • Blow system is leaking. Needs fixing. • Metrology results of alignment pieces • of top frame show too large • differences betweenZeiss and Wenzel. mm Needs to be clarified !! VELO
Additional fundingrequested from coming CB for production • of 42 VELO-modules by Q1 2010. • Possible reasons: • beam x VELO accident • replacement due to radiation damage • Preparation scheme of new detector halves yet unclear. • Production of 2 complete spare detector bases (= base, • hood, vacuum feedthroughs, long kaptons, evaporator, • trolley) under discussion. VELO
Detector installation • A lot of external constraints: magnet test, platform A-side, • RICH1, TT, survey group, vacuum group, transport team, etc. • Preliminary planning contains >60 items. Present version: • Oct. 22-24: • * Survey the outside of the VELO by CERN-survey group • * Comparison with previous data in collaboration with NIKHEF • Monday Oct. 29: • * Open the VELO • * Level + perpendicularity measurements of the detector • supports by NIKHEF • * Make adjustments if necessary/possible • * Survey of the center, inner and top frames by CERN-group VELO
Tuesday Oct. 30: • * insert A-half + check performance. If still OK then • Wednesday Oct. 31: • * insert C-half + check performance. • Thursday November 1: • * final checkout + closing • Friday November 2: • * evacuate beampipe + VELO • Monday+Tuesday November 5+6: • * motion tests + precise positioning measurements • Wednesday+Thursday November 7+8: • * venting with ultrapure Neon VELO
In November and December a lot of physics manpower is needed for commissioning of the whole VELO-chain (LV, HV, CB, TELL1, TB, DSS, interlocks, cooling). When all these items work reliably for one half then start operating that detector half. VELO
