TERMS OF PARALYMPIC ATHLETE SKIING • Paralympic Alpine Skiing • In Paralympic alpine skiing, athletes with a physical disability compete in downhill, giant slalom, slalom, super combined and super-G. • Black-Out Goggles • All competitors in the totally blind class must wear opaque goggles to block out any peripheral vision. • Guide • Using only voice signals or radio communication, a guide (a sighted able-body skier) directs an athlete through the course. In partially sighted classes, the guide must ski in front of the athlete. For totally blind classes, the guide can ski either in front or behind the athlete. • Sit-ski • Some alpine skiers with a spinal cord injury compete in a sitting position using a sit-ski, also called a mono-ski. The sit-ski is a fitted chair attached to a single ski below. The chair is tailored to the skier and has strapping to keep the athlete in position. A suspension device under the chair reduces impact on the athlete’s body.

1 FACT AND OPINION- 1 PICTURE • I think these athletes need to be very brave to do this sport they are risking their lives for this sport and it makes it harder if they get hurt to recover. • These athletes are very nervous probably when they compete but they just love the sport they don’t care if they place or if they don’t.
