  2. Name Meaning • Algonquin- "our allies" • Cherokee- “speakers of another language.” • Mohawk- "man-eaters."

  3. Where they live today • Algonquin-Today they live in nine communities in Quebec and one in Ontario. • Cherokee-. Descendants of the Cherokee Indians who survived this death march still live in Oklahoma today. • Mohawk-. Some Mohawk people still live in New York today, but most Mohawks retreated to Canada in the 1700's.

  4. Language • Algonquin-Some bands are English-speaking, and others are French-speaking. About half the Algonquin population also speak their native Algonquin language. • Cherokee-Most Cherokee people speak English today, but 20,000 people also speak the Cherokee Indian language. • Mohawk-Most Mohawk people speak English today, but some Mohawks also speak their native Mohawk language.

  5. What were their roles • Algonquin-Algonquin women gathered plants to eat and did most of the child care and cooking. Men were hunters and sometimes went to war to protect their families. • Cherokee-Cherokee men were in charge of hunting, war, and diplomacy. Cherokee women were in charge of farming, property, and family. • Mohawk-Mohawk men were in charge of hunting, trading, and war. Mohawk women were in charge of farming, property, and family.

  6. What they lived in • Algonquin- Wigwams • Cherokee- Houses made of rivercane and plaster, with thatched roofs • Mohawk-Longhouses • Today the majority live in modern houses and apartment buildings, just like we do.

  7. Famous People • Algonquin-Hockey star Gino Odjick is Algonquin from Kitigan Zibi. • Cherokee-Sequoyah succeeded in inventing a writing system for Cherokee that is still used today. Wilma Mankiller, the first woman to be Principal Chief of the Cherokee tribe. • Mohawk-Chief Hendricks was a famous chief that fought during the French and Indian War.

  8. Religion • Algonquin-characterized by a belief in a divinity residing in all creatures, as well as within all natural objects. • Cherokee-took part in ceremonies they thought sacred. • Mohawk-Most were animist traditions believing in the spiritual powers of Nature and Mother Earth as well as in the spirits of creatures, natural forces and landscape features.
