Importance of Lesson(Dari) • Insert Dari • Attempts are made to prevent emergencies from happening. Though many emergency situations can be prevented emergencies still occur. • Being prepared to deal with emergencies can help to reduce the negative impacts of emergencies. • One method is to have already prepared emergency kits containing equipment and other medical supplies that may be required. Overview EO 007.01(Dari) • Factors to consider in kit development • Common medical supplies in kits • Kit re-evaluation • Lesson Review • Quiz (not graded) • Insert Dari AFAMS
Considerations in Kit DesignDari There are three simple questions that must be asked in designing an medical emergency kit: • Who will be using the kit? • Where will this kit be used? • How long until evacuation to a higher level of care? • Insert Dari AFAMS
Who will be using the kit?Dari • Level of training: • Physicians have a vast skill set while Combat Medics are limited to specific protocols. Therefore, physicians can require more medical supplies and equipment. • Specialty qualifications such as Flight Surgeon. They may require specialized equipment. • Insert Dari AFAMS
Where will the kit be used?Dari • Types of injuries expected: Gunshot wounds, blast injuries, to simple injuries. • Location: Due to the isolation of a patrol additional equipment may be required. E.g. On patrol vs in hospital • Temperature: Certain medications and medical supplies must be stored at certain temperatures and therefore, may be inappropriate for kit use. • Size/ Weight: The kit bag will be of limited size and must fit all supplies. These kits will be carried and therefore, this restricts the weight of individual pieces of the kit. • Insert Dari AFAMS
How long until evacuation to a higher level of care? Dari • Evacuation supplies: • casualty tags, communication reports… • Increased time to evacuation: • More equipment and medical supplies required to keep patients stabilized. • Additional medical interventions may be required necessitating additional kit. • Insert Dari AFAMS
Common Medical Supplies in KitsDari Chest Seal Pressure Bandage • Insert Dari Tourniquet Combat Gauze with coagulant AFAMS
Types of Maintenance • Preventative (Scheduled) • Corrective (Unscheduled) • Insert Dari AFAMS
Making Recommendations for KitsDari • Emergency Kits are standardized to ensure the same equipment is available in all kits • It also ensures items that are not required or are not cost-effective are not used • It limits waste • It is not uncommon that changes to kits are required due to: • Changes in treatment protocols • Lack of supply from Manufacturer • New equipment that is more cost-effective • Failure of equipment or supplies in the field • Requests for addition and/or removal of kit should be written to MEDCOM. • Ensures standardization • Cost-effectiveness review • Insert Dari AFAMS
In-Class Quiz (Assessment)Dari Formative Assessment: • Not marked • Used to assess the students’ understanding of the considerations taken when designing an emergency kit. • The Instructor will provide the answers and debrief post quiz. Time: 30 mins • Insert Dari
