Graphing the Weather Lynnae Peterson Tools for Data Analysis February 2014
Introduction • Target Audience: First Grade • Timeline: Daily; All Year • Standards: • CCSS.Math.Content.1.NBT.A.1 Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. • CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.C.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another. • 5.4.P.F.1 Observe and record weather.
Goals and Objectives • The learner will chart weather and temperature on a daily basis using Microsoft Excel. • The learner will properly input data into a Microsoft Excel workbook. • The learner will record mathematical data in their Morning Routine Journals.
Procedure • Everyday, the students will go over several concepts during morning routine. • Two children will be assigned to prepare morning routine for the class. • Their duties will include: • Changing the date on the calendar • Recording weather and temperature • Adding a straw to place value chart • Adding appropriate coin to money chart
Procedure • Two student helpers will input the correct data into the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. The students will observe the weather conditions daily and select the appropriate condition from the drop down menu. They must also check the link provided (www.accuweather.com) for the daily temperature. • As a class, we will go over all of the components of morning routine. • All students will record the weather and temperature information in their Morning Routine Journal.
Evaluation • The morning routine helpers will be evaluated by teacher observation. The teacher will check the validity of their responses and adjust information as deemed necessary. • The students will also be evaluated on the completion of their individual Morning Routine Journal.
Brainy Bits • Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences • Visual- Visual representation of data • Musical- Chants for morning routine • Kinesthetic- Helpers change information • Verbal- Discuss Concepts • Logical- Using the computer; inputting data • Intrapersonal- Individual work • Interpersonal- Whole Group Discussion
