  2. How does geography contribute to the three cross-curriculum priorities in the Australian Curriculum? What things can a primary teacher introduce to students?

  3. The three cross-curriculum priorities • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures • Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia • Sustainability The subject of geography is closely related to all of these and contributes greatly to their development

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures • Australia’s unique geography is the product of ancient biophysical environments, the long and continuous history of its Indigenous peoples, and the more recent influences of diverse settlers and migrant cultures • The interactions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with their environments and other peoples are embedded into the geography curriculum

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures At Foundation to Year 4 level you can discuss: • places of significance to these people • ways in which these people care for places • how these people described the weather with seasonal calendars • place names given by these people • relationships of these people with the land • spatial distribution of these people in 1788 and now

Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia • China, India and other Asian nations are growing rapidly, and the power and influence they have in all areas of global endeavour is extensive • The study of geography is a key to understanding the nations of Asia and Australia’s interconnections with them

Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia At Foundation to Year 4 level you can discuss: • differences between local places and those in Asia • the continent and countries of Asia on a map • connections with Asia through travel, sport, goods • the life of children in different places in Asia • examples of environments, landforms, climate in Asia • examples of agriculture, mining, fishing in Asia

Sustainability • Sustainability is about the ongoing capacity of earth to maintain all life • Sustainability is one of the key concepts of geography • Geography develops both the cognitive understanding of why sustainability is essential and the affective appreciation of the need for active participation in this

Sustainability At Foundation to Year 4 level you can discuss: • caring for places in the local area • using and conserving water • decisions made to change places • providing and maintaining habitats for animals • renewable and non-renewable resources • our production and consumption and wastes
