What is the FCAT? The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is a test given to all Florida students as part of Florida’s overall plan to increase student achievement, by implementing higher standards for public school students. The FCAT for the 5th graders has three sections: Reading, Mathand Science.
Who takes the FCAT? • All public school students in Grades 3 -11 are required to take the FCAT . • 5th graders will take the Reading, Math and Science. • For the 2012-2013 school year, 5th graders will take their Math FCAT on the computer.
Possible Questions What happens if my child does not pass 5th grade curriculum? • Retention What does my child need to pass 5th grade? • 2 or higher on the Math and Reading FCAT. • Passing grades for all 4 quarters. What are the opportunities to pass grade 5? • FCAT • Alternative Assessment
When is the FCAT? • FCAT Testing begins April 15th – 19th of 2013 • Reading- April 15-16 • Math- April 17-18 • Science April 19, 22 • Make-Ups – Following Week • Duration of Test • 70 minutes EACH DAY THEY TEST
What is the FCAT Reading test like? • The FCAT reading test consists of reading passages, fiction or nonfiction, and then responding to comprehension questions. The questions are multiple choice. • We prepare the students for this test by using the FCAT task cards, which give sample FCAT questions. • We are practicing together for the FCAT reading test.
What is on the FCAT Math test? • The FCAT Math test consists of multiple choice questions and fill in the bubble. • The test will be taken on the computer • Following directions • Solving problems in the areas of: • Number sense, Measurement, Geometry, Algebra, and Data Analysis, Fractions, Long Division (biggest portion), Decimals
FCAT SCIENCE • The FCAT science test consists of multiple choice questions in the areas of: • Nature of Science, Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, and Life Science.
Tips to Help Your Child with the FCAT! • Attend school regularly • Meet your child’s teacher to discuss his/her progress • Encourage your child ESPECIALLY when he/she does well. • Provide a quiet comfortable place for studying at home • Make sure that your child is well rested on school days • Give your child a well rounded diet • Provide books and magazines • DON’T be too anxious about your child’s test scores. • Best Advice to give your child is to “Just relax and do your best”.
