Waivers and Exemptions • CDE is currently developing Web-based programs for data collection of both waivers and exemptions information • Starting in the fall, CDE will be collecting the number of students granted waivers and exemptions for 2006-07 school year • Wavier information shall be reported to CDE by December 31, 2007 • Exemption information shall be reported to CDE by February 1, 2008 CAHSEE September 6, 2007 Web Cast
Waivers and Exemptions • Education Code Section 60851(c) permits local school boards to grant a waiver of the CAHSEE requirement to students with disabilities who take the CAHSEE using modifications and receive the equivalent of a passing score. • Education Code Section 60852.4 provides an exemption of the requirement to pass the CAHSEE for students with disabilities scheduled to receive a diploma on or before December 31, 2007 if several conditions are met. Litigation Update • Valenzuela Settlement The settlement is contingent on the passage of AB 347. This bill is designed to ensure that students who fail to pass the CAHSEE and graduate may receive an additional two years of academic assistance from their school districts. Remediationhttp://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/admin.asp • Education Code Section 37252 - Districts must provide remediation to students in grades 7 through 12 who do not show sufficient progress toward passing the CAHSEE. • Education Code Section 37254 (Intensive Instruction and Services Grant): • $72.4 million statewide compared to $69.5 million last year. • All LEAs that apply will receive funding. • LEAs will receive up to $520 for each grade 12 student who has not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE. • Any remaining funds will be distributed to LEAs for grade 11 students.
