İnsan genomu 80 ile 300 milyon baz çifti arasında değişen ve 22 otozom ile 2 cinsiyet kromozomu arasında dağılmış, kabaca 3 milyar baz çiftinden oluşan DNA molekülü içerir. • Toplam gen sayısı 29.000-36000 arasındadır. • Nukleotid dizilerinin %99.9’u bütün insanlarda aynıdır. • İnsanda 1,5 milyon kadar tek nukleotid değişikliği bölgesi saptanmıştır. Genomun yaklaşık %2’si proteinleri kodlamaktadır.
