Country One Rural Transport Project • Objective: Improve the socio-economic condition of women, men and youth in project area by providing affordable and quality transport services
Findings of Rapid Gender Review • Women and men in rural areas lack appropriate means of transport, and not able to take their agriculture products to markets, thus lack income and incentive to produce more products and diversify, depressed local economy • Transport services in the closest highways are infrequent and cost is high. • Accidents are increasing as nearby highways have no safety measures • Increasing natural disasters making households vulnerable • Lack of information and communication services (radio, telephone, internet) in the area • Cultural constraints on women’s mobility • Constraints on mobility of elderly, people with disability
Project components • Improving transport of agricultural products to markets by providing IMT (intermediate transport) • Disaster preparedness • Institutional development
Component 1: Improving transport of agricultural products to markets • Construct feeder roads connecting rural areas to highways • Provision of donkey and carts on hire/purchase for affordable services • Facilitate women’s groups as providers of donkey cart services • Capacity building of local artisans in cart manufacture, donkey care and tree planting as animal feed • Veterinary assistance, training paramedics on animal care.
Disaster preparedness • Mapping settlements to locate climate vulnerable people easily • Develop community disaster preparedness plans in consultations with women and men • Establish communication system, and awareness campaign on disaster preparedness • Establish and train community rescue teams consisting of women and men, • Evacuation strategy and action plans with shelters,
Institutional development • Gender training of project staff • Training of drivers on road safety • Sensitization on HIV/AIDS • Develop gender-responsive monitoring and evaluation capacity
